Purpose / This unit standard is for people who work in the industrial textile fabrication industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: select material to be welded and set up the hot air welder; and weld fabric pieces together.

Explanatory notes

2Definition

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements.

Outcome 1

Select material to be welded and set up the hot air welder.

Rangeeither hand held or mobile.

Evidence requirements

1.1Material is selected in accordance with customer and/or company requirements.

1.2Welding aids are selected to suit the job in accordance with the manufacturer specifications and company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – fabric guides, weights, rollers, nozzles.

1.3Welder is set up to suit material and job specifications in accordance with company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – width of weld, number and types of weld, temperature, speed, pressure, airflow.

1.4Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety; safety of other people; workshop safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety.

Outcome 2

Weld fabric pieces together.

Evidence requirements

2.1Material to be welded is prepared and pieces produced in accordance with company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – correct cutting process, clean, dust free, dry, free of oil and grease.

2.2Sample of job material is welded and adjustments made until a weld is proved in warp and weft directions in accordance with company requirements.

2.3Job pieces are welded in the required position and checked in accordance with company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – correct position, flat, wrinkle free, correct adhesion, free of marks and burns.

2.4On completion of job, welding machine is cleaned and stored in accordance with company requirements.

2.5Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.
