PATIENT SUPPORT GRANT

Application Form

The Society for Endocrinology actively promotes education of the public in all aspects of endocrinology. As well as educating scientists, doctors and nurses, we take an active interest in the welfare of patients with endocrine conditions, and ensuring that those who support them have access to good training and information.

The Society has made an amount of money available for a series of grants to assist small, pre-approved UK charities and patient support groups who work with endocrine-related conditions. We are now inviting proposals from patient groups for these awards. The maximum amount that any one group can apply for is £4000.

To be considered for an award, a group will need to fulfil the following conditions:

1.The organisation must be pre-approved and demonstrate:

  • A clear endocrine remit; must be actively catering for patients with endocrine conditions
  • Provision of patient support and information
  • A work force of less than 10 full time staff (or equivalent)
  • Have evidence of a constitution and, where practical, charity registration. Recently-established organisationsshould supply details of their plans to set up a constitution and, if appropriate, to apply for charitable status.
  • Evidence of good practice, particularly as regards staff training and quality control
  • Evidence that the type and quantity of support provided to patients is in line with what might be expected from the size of the organisation.
  • Have an annual income of less that £1,000,000
  • Have a national remit to offer patient support over the whole of the UK
  • Have a named medical advisor(s) who is a Society Member, and/or be approved by the Society’s Clinical Committee

2.The project must demonstrate:

  • A clear focus on patient information and/or patient education regarding an endocrine condition
  • Direct patient benefit
  • Evidence that the project would benefit a significant proportion of the potential

Membership/client base

  • Focus and detail, regarding both the content of the project and the costing.

Preference will be given to projects that have a long lifespan.

Applications will be judged according to the quality of existing services, as well as on the quality of the proposed project. Due allowance will be made for new or recently established groups. No single patient support group may apply for more than one award.

The applications will be judged by a panel of endocrinologists (members of the Society’s Clinical and Nurse Committees) and a patient group representative. (The patient support group representative will not judge any application from their own organisation).

If successful, any expenditure should be completed within 12 months of the award (unless otherwise agreed by the Society). Recipients will be required to submit a brief report on expenditure and how this expenditure has fulfilled stated goals within 18 months of the award.

As examples, a group may apply for an award for:

  • Development of patient information resources
  • Purchase of a piece of equipment
  • Financing a specific project within the relevant time period
  • Staff and/or volunteer training
  • Infrastructure costs

However, please do not feel bound by these examples – we welcome all reasonable proposals.

Closing date for applications: at noon on Wednesday 21 March 2018
