Objective:

You will now demonstrate the skills you have acquired during this module of study. At the completion of this task, you will demonstrate your knowledge of use of materials, CAD and structural design as you construct a model robot chassis in both virtual and physical environment.

Materials, structures and design all come into play when combining components to create a prototype. CAD can improve the design process affording engineers a powerful tool for innovation and creativity. One of the problems that engineers face is saving cost when building structures no matter how large or how small. Virtual design and prototyping help designers produce models as a proof of a concept or study model and this reduces cost. Models and prototypes are used in the design process to test strength and function. Using the tools that support the engineering/design process, engineers can create a model that operates as specified the first timeand provides the best bang for the research and development “buck”.

Scenario:

RoboTech, Inc. has awarded your firm a contract to design a general purpose robot platform to test the various sensors they manufacture. The end product cannot weigh more than 45 kilograms and must completely reside within a 75cm cube. Before materials are committed to a full scale build, your supervisor has directed you to CAD and then build a working study model as a prototype. She recommended you use a prototype kit like LegoMindstorms, Tetrix, Fischertechnik or Vex to get the job done.

Deliverables:

You will produce a complete, accurate and detailed CAD drawing of the basic Mindstorms platform shown in the concept designs above. You will also construct a model of a working prototype. It may be necessary to perform these two tasks simultaneously. You should refer to the Mindstorms NXT software for assembly advice. Leave the model assembled for future tasks.
