People have been making boats for over 6,000 years. All boats can float on water. Boats have been made of many things. Some boats were made of reeds. Some were made of tree trunks. Today, most boats are fiberglass or aluminum. A few are still made of wood. Big ships are made of steel.
Boats can be moved in different ways. If the water is not deep, people can use poles to push. In deep water, people can paddle. About 4,000 years ago the Egyptians discovered the wind could move boats. The first sail boat had a square cotton sail. Today, engines move motor boats and ships. But people still use sail boats for fun.
