Aquatics Study Guide

Safety:

-AED- Automatic External Defibrillator

-Rescue Tube- Lifeguard Rescue device used to “THROW” or enter the water for a victim.

-Rescue Ring (Ring Buoy) - Used to “THROW” when a victim is greater distance from shore/edge of pol.

-Reaching Pole- Used to reach for a victim and pull them to safety.

-Back Board- Used to assist in a potential Head/Neck/Back injury. Can be used in deep or shallow water to stabilize a victim.

Strokes:

Stroke / Kick / Breathing / Other Notes
Front Crawl/Freestyle / Flutter / Rhythmic / Kick should be consistent and breathing rhythmical. Hands should pierce the water, not slap the surface.
Back Crawl/ Back Stroke / Flutter / Regular, Head is out of water / Pinkies should enter the water first on each stroke. Roll slightly like a log side-to-side.
Breast Stroke / Whip (Like a frog) / Rhythmic / Pull-kick-glide. Skull under the water as you reach forward.
Elementary Back Stroke / Whip / Regular, Face is out of water / Upside down frog in the water. Resting Stroke
Side Stroke / Scissor / Regular, Head is up and out of water / Resting stroke. Should have a glide between strokes to rest. Pick the apple, trade hands, drop it in the bucket, repeat.

Other skills:

-Rescue entry- Keep head up and looking forward as you jump into the water. Arms and legs egg beater immediately upon entry to keep the head up.

-Surface Dive-

  • Tuck- Tuck in half and go down hands and head first. Clear water only.
  • Feet First- Raise up as high as possible, then push your self to the bottom feet first. Used in cloudy/mirky water.

-HELP position- Heat. Escape. Lessening. Position Used with a life jacket to keep warm in colder water. Tuck the legs and get in a “balled up” position.

Kayaking:

-Bow- Front of the kayak

-Stern- Back of the kayak

-Starboard- Right side

-Port- Left side

-Cockpit- This is where you sit.

  • Parts of the Paddle: Blade- Shaft- Throat/Neck- Drip Cup

Kayak Safety/etiquette:

-Line your paddle up with your kayak if you pass another kayak to avoid hitting other kayakers.

-If your kayak tips, the proper “rescue” procedure is : people 1st, boats 2nd, and backpacks/gear 3rd.

-Terms to know:

  • Portage- To carry the boat.
  • Swamping- When the boat capsizes and fills with water.

-Shallow Water Shake-out- If the boat is swamped in shallow water, lift it overhead with a partner and empty it out.

-Boat-over-boat Rescue- When a boat capsizes in deep water, a second boat should approach it perpendicular. Swimmers push the capsized boat up onto the upright boat forming a + formation to empty it out, then slide the boat back in the water.
