Healthy Kids Challenge, in partnership with Johnson & WalesUniversity, announces the 7th annual middleschool recipe contest “Stirring Up Health”.
“Stirring Up Health” is brought to you by featured sponsors,Cabot Creamery and Mission Foods, two leaders in thefood industry making a difference in the market placewith tasty, nutritious and family friendly food products.

Entry Rules
For eligibility all contest rules must be observed
- Contestant must be currently enrolled in 7th or 8thgrade.
- Contestant can enter only one recipe.
- All entries must be signed by a parent or guardian and if entry prepared as part of a class experience, a teacher.
- A color photographof the recipe must be included.
- Essay must be included.
- Recipe must include cheese and tortillas as primary ingredients.
- Recipe must be lower in fat, sugar, and salt compared to a typical recipe.

Ingredient Requirements
Must include ingredients from at least 3 food groups in the recipe
Must include cheese and tortillas as primary ingredients in the recipe (cottage cheese qualifies as a cheese ingredient)
Recipe guidelines
The recipe must:
Specify number of servings (a 1 serving recipe is okay)
List ingredients and quantities, followed by the steps in the preparation process in numerical order (follow the sample recipe on the next page)
Be lower in fat, sugar, and salt compared to typical recipes
Be original or a healthy revised recipe. Plagiarized recipes will not be accepted.
Essay
Along with the recipe, entry form, and photograph, each student must answer the essayquestionson page 6and submit.

Sample Recipe Outline
Name of Recipe: Gourmet Breakfast Sandwich
Number of Servings: 4
Ingredients:
8 slices whole wheat bread
1/2 cup grated carrot
2 tablespoons drained, crushed, unsweetened pineapple
4 thin slices Canadian bacon
4 ounces grated Mozzarella cheese
Steps in Preparation:
- Pre-heat oven broiler.
- Mix grated carrot and pineapple.
- Place 4 slices of bread on a baking sheet.
- Top each slice of bread with 1 slice of Canadian bacon, carrot/pineapple mixture, and grated Mozzarella cheese.
- Place in oven and broil until the cheese is melted.
- Cover with a second slice of bread.
