Why Do New Home Buyers Choose to Build Their New Home from Aidome Building Kit?

American Ingenuity(Ai) has been in business for over 40 years and has shipped dome building kits to 47 U.S. states and 15 foreign countries (Caribbean, Thailand, Australia, etc.) from its Rockledge Florida factory. Aidesigns geodesic dome building plans with an AutoCAD program for residential homes or businesses when finished with local materials result in a tiny building of 172 sq.ft. to almost 3,000 sq.ft. in one dome. Multiple domes can be linked together to make larger complexes. The exterior shell kits pricing ranges from $20,000 to $67,000 - pricing does not include shipping.

Building an Aidome from a building kit consisting of prefabricated concrete panels makes home construction easier and results in a super-energy efficient and strong home whose exterior panels come with 225 mph wind and F4 tornado warranty. The process of stacking the panels, overlapping/locking the steel mesh of adjacent panels and filling the seams with special fiber concrete, produces the structural components of the home, the finished concrete surface, installs the insulation and all the dome shell 1/2″ drywall.

Why do new home buyers choose to build their new home from Aidome building kit?

  1. Exterior Strength – due to triangle shape (strongest shape known to man) and the steel reinforced concrete exterior – Aidomes have withstood all major hurricanes, tree impact and an earthquake.
  2. An Aidome in the US Virgin Islands withstood two category five hurricanes (Irma & Maria) in twelve day period with no damage.
  3. An Aidome in the British Virgin Islands withstood hurricane Irma’s 200 mph wind with no damage.
  4. An Aidome in Homestead Florida went through category five Hurricane Andrew (and a tornado) with only minor damage –a hair line crack and small piece of concrete broken where a double wide steel horse trailer was slammed on the dome by high winds.
  5. An Aidome in Slidell Louisiana went through Hurricane Katrina with no damage.
  6. An Aidome in South Carolina had a 30” in diameter hickory tree fall on the dome, with no damage. Our use of galvanized steel mesh within the panel (which extends out of each panel and is locked to adjacent mesh), creates a continuous wrap of steel reinforced concrete throughout the dome. The mesh transferred the stress of impact over the entire dome (as opposed to a box shaped house, where the impact would be localized slicing through the roof and falling into the house).
  7. An Aidome in Hawaii went thru 6.6 earthquake with no damage to the dome. Where the rectangle shaped link attached to the two domes, a crack occurred, it was sealed with Eternabond RoofSeal tape and patching compound.

  9. Super Energy Efficiency: The cost to build one of Ai dome kits runs about the same to build per square foot as a traditional home (not built within a housing development) but has insulation comparable to10” of fiberglass! The exterior of the dome has 30% less surface area than a box shaped house; so almost automatically the heating and cooling costs are 30% less. A traditional home would require 2x10 frameconstruction with 10” of fiberglass batting to come close to our dome…and would have framing interrupting the insulation. The thick insulation allows cooling and heating bills to be reduced 50% to 60% over a conventional house utility costs (this link lists electric bills for our offices a 45’ dome linked to 34’ dome,– 3700 sq. ft. under air, which is cooled for less than $80 a month during the summer in Florida).
  10. An American Ingenuity 40′ in diameter Dome Home with 1,985 sq.ft can be cooled for less than $50.00 a month during Florida’s Hottest Months.
  11. One of our customers in Pennsylvania built a 40′ dome on a full basement (3,013 sq.ft.) and told us: “We live in the mountains of PA. The winters up here can be brutal. Our Ai Dome is a 40ft with Link on a 9″ thick livable basement. {Den, Office/Computer room, Kitchenette} The entire interior, to include the mechanical room, is heated and cooled by a GeoThermal, Water furnace, Radiant floor system. Our zone controllers are set on 74 degrees winter and summer. Our sole power source, at present, is the grid. Our costs per month range from $99 to a high of $120. We were amazed that our cost now are less than when we lived in a 14 ft by 73 ft mobile home while building the Dome. Our decision to build an American Ingenuity Dome home was the best decision we have ever made.”FYI, it is even easier to heat an Aidome than to cool it.
  12. One of Ai's domes beat Florida Power and Light's passive solar home to win an Aurora Award for the most energy efficient residence in the southeastern United States.
  13. There is no roof to blow off in high winds or to burn in a fire or to replace every 11-12 years. The exterior is concrete reinforced with galvanized steel mesh and fibers that is primed and painted. Is repainted every 4-6 years with elastomeric paint.
  14. Fire Resistant Concrete Exterior: There is no wood in the domes panels to burn, rot or for termites to eat. Where the homeowners locally purchased doors and windows are installed, a vertical framed wall of pressure treated wood is installed. The exterior of the framed wall is lathe and concreted. So, the entire exterior of the dome is concrete. Ai has shipped kits into California to replace wood framed homes destroyed by fires. (Please note during kit assembly a temporary wooden rib system is assembled to support the panels. When the kit assembly is complete, the dome is self-supporting, and the rib system is removed).
  15. The Prefab Panels contain No Food Source for Mold Growth – steel reinforced concrete, expanded polystyrene insulation and Georgia Pacific special DensArmor provide no source of food for mold growth.
  16. All Materials in the Panel are non-combustible.
  17. The Aidome results in spacious unique architecture with high vaulted ceilings. Ai can design floor plan layouts to fit each family’s life style.Ai has a full-service drafting department that designs the building plans. If a stock plan does not fit their lifestyle, we can customize or modify a stock plan layout for a reasonable fee.To view stock plans for each size dome, click on Stock Plans. Ai’s stock plans show the interior layout of the dome, along with window and door locations. For structural integrity, wherever your locally purchased exterior doors and windows will be installed, an “awning” or “eyebrow” is installed on the dome kit shell. These “awnings” or “eyebrows” are called entryways and dormers and can be viewed under Building Options. Each stock plan varies as to the number of entryways and dormers; custom plans contain the number of structural awnings per your design. Under these awnings, onsite a vertical wall is framed in, and the windows and doors installed. Our dome building kits do not include your exterior doors and windows or any interior items other than the dome exterior shell insulation & drywall. This is to save the client, shipping costs for an additional truck for items which can be purchased locally. To view 3D layouts on a few dome plans, click on 3D.

The prefabricated panels for the dome kit include exterior 3/4″ concrete reinforced with galvanized steel mesh and fibers, center core of nontoxic, rigid, 7″ Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) R-28 insulation (not Styrofoam) with half-inch Georgia Pacific DensArmor Plus drywall adhered to the underside of the EPS with drywall adhesive.

Onsite, the kit is assembled by lifting the panels into place with some type of hoisting mechanism, overlapping and locking the galvanized steel mesh in the seam areas. The seams, entryways and dormers are then concreted onsite with fiber concrete (seam concrete averages 2″ thick). The concrete/steel/eps/ and drywall contain no food source for mold growth and are noncombustible.Since the panels come pre-concreted, only the seam areas between the panels, along with and the entryways and dormers are concreted on site; resulting in reduced on site labor costs versus building a conventional house with separate materials to build the vertical walls and install roof trusses, plywood, tarpaper, shingles, insulation and drywall.

American Ingenuity designs the building plans and manufactures the dome building kit.Ai is not a construction company. Owner/builders or Builders can hire theindependent kit assembly consultantto supervise their workers during kit assembly and then local subcontractors complete the conventional electrical, plumbing, framing, etc. Ai provides our clients a full assembly manual with their kit purchase. The Nomenclature Blueprint in the Building Plans shows the dome geometry with all the panels marked with letters and numbers which match the numbering on the prefab panels. The building plans are a professional set of blueprints which contain from 13-20 blueprints using USA feet and inch dimensions. Plans can be converted to metric for a small fee. The number of sheets depends on size of dome and the type of entryways and dormers in the kit. The blueprints contain dimensions to install a concrete slab and instructions for panel, dormer and entryway installation, etc. Due to soil and flooding possibilities, Ai can design custom foundations such as elevated platforms, break-away basement walls, pilings, etc.

Having its manufacturing plant located in Florida is advantageous forshippingsince more is shipped in than out of the state, leaving many trucks headed out empty. Ai utilizes these independent trucking agencies. We contract to have these trucks carry your building kits outside Florida for approximately $2.70 to $2.90 per mile per semi-truck from our plant in Rockledge, Florida. Shipping within Florida is a minimum of $1,100. These trucking costs are less than we could do with our own trucks because if we used our own trucks, they would have to deliver the kit and return to Ai’s factory empty. The dome kits are shippedinternationally via containers.
