Welcome to participate in the Annual EBC Symposium 15 December 2010

The activities will fill the whole day and finish with an evening pub from ca. 18:00 onwards. More details concerning the pub will be available soon. Theaim of the symposium is to increase inter-departmental discussions and give feedback to PhD students from all parts of EBC. Therefore, it is expected that all PhD students and academic staff participate.

Everyone should register! This applies to senior staffs and PhD-students who will come and listen to poster presenters and speakers. We need your registration by 20 November and titles for talks and posters by 26 November. You will receive an e-mail with a form to return to Reiko Akiyama ().

EBC pub

Tentative time: ca. 18:00- after the symposium

Place: around Mickes kök - plenty of space to mingle and seats to sit down!

Cash bar and snacks will be available

This year, the pub will be organised by a PhD student team from Animal Ecology and Population Biology.

Do not miss this opportunity to get to know and have a chat with people from different departments at EBC!!

During a PhD period all students are expected to give two presentations:

• Year 1: – Poster presentation with research question, methodology and perhaps some early results.
• Year 2 or 3: – Regular conference-like oral presentation of one part of the PhD project.

The content should be understandable (at least the introduction) forall EBC scientists.

** We would like to invite all of you presenting a poster to participate in the EBC symposium’s annual ‘Best Poster’ competition!During the two poster sessions an appointed group of researchers will evaluate all posters and reveal the results later during the evening pub.The guidelines and details of the competition will be provided during the poster workshop.

Instructions for poster presenters All poster presenters are expected to participate in a poster workshop on 22 November and 29 November, where you will get feedback on your preliminary poster (make it full size and print it smaller for that occasion) and get some tips and ideas on how to improve it. After you have finished your poster it will be printed free of charge. For that you need to send Reiko Akiyama() a pdf file of your poster before Monday 6 December.

At the symposium there will be two poster sessions. Poster session 1 will take place during the last part of the lunch break and session 2 at the beginning of the evening pub. For session no. 2 we will carry the screens up to the restaurant where we will have the pub after all oral presentations are finished.

The posters should be put up in the morning before the conference starts or the day before. We will make sure that the screens are in place in the entrance hall (Norbyvägen 14) by 17:00on Tuesday 14 December.
Please contact Reiko Akiyama ()if you have any queries about the EBC symposium.

Instructions for speakers

All speakers who will take part in the workshop on 13 December should attend the lecture on 06 December. During the workshop you will give your talk in front of a small group of other symposium speakers who will give you feedback, help you identify the strengths in your talk and suggest developments. It is important that you make an introduction where you put your research into a larger perspective, aiming for all PhD-students at EBC to follow.
You will all have exactly 15 minutes for your talk and questions. I recommend that you aim for a 12-13 minutes talk and 1-3 minutes for a question or two. We will encourage people to ask more questions and give feedback during the breaks and evening activities. There will be a moderator for each session helping you to keep track of the time.
There will be a folder in Huxley/public named EBC-symposium where we want all of you to place your ppt-file no later than 13:00 on Tuesday 14 December. We will check that all the files work on our systems so that everything runs smoothly during the symposium.

Please contact Reiko Akiyama () if you have any queries about the EBC symposium.

Most welcome to the Annual EBC Symposium,

Reiko Akiyama and Peter Eklöv
