Welcome to AMIGO

Welcome to AMIGO

Amigo Centre Outdoor/Environmental Education Program

“GUIDELINES TO LIVE WITH”

What we invite you to do during your visit:

  • Live with nature. Please do not pick leaves or flowers and allow all wild animals to return safely to their homes. Stay on the trails and walkways. Please respect the wonders of creation by “taking only pictures, leaving only footprints”.
  • Be courteous and respectful of one another. Avoid “put-downs” and negative remarks.
  • Enjoy learning through experiencing – nature is a wonderful teacher.
  • Have fun! 

Safety Guidelines:

  • The First Aid Station is located in Junco, a cottage near the Pavilion.
  • Avoid chewing gum. Animals can get sick or die from swallowing discarded gum.
  • Throwing sticks and rocks is not acceptable.
  • Benches are for sitting on, not standing or walking on.
  • Students are not to enter other cabins or rooms without permission from an adult. Boys are never to be in girls’ cabins and girls are never to be in boys’ cabins.
  • Shoes are to be worn outside at all times.
  • No smoking in any buildings. Adults may smoke in the parking lot area, only.
  • Students are NEVER to touch or play with fire extinguishers.
  • No students are permitted at the waterfront without an adult.
  • Alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs are prohibited. Tobacco is illegal when possessed by a student.
  • No food or drink is allowed in cabins. Having it there is an invitation for mice to come enjoy the food too.

NatureCenter Guidelines:

  • The NatureCenter is to be used only when there is adult supervision.
  • “Inside voices” are encouraged in the Nature Center. Rowdiness and noise disturb the live animals in the NatureCenter.

Bells:

  • The bell rings ONLY in the morning before breakfast. Be sure to bring alarm clocks and watches to keep track of time.
  • The bell ringing continuously signifies that we have an emergency. Gather by cabin groups in the pavilion if you hear the emergency bell.

Meals:

  • Meet for meals at Cabin Circle (or other designated spot).
  • Everyone attends meals unless cleared by a teacher.
  • Shirts and shoes are required in the dining hall. Please remove hats when in the dining hall.
  • ZERO WASTE – this is our goal. “Take all you want, but eat what you take”. Please help cut out food waste. seconds will be available.
  • Students should remain seated at their tables until dismissed by Amigo staff.
  • No food or drink may be removed from the dining hall.
  • Seven students and one adult per table.
  • The hot drink bar is for the chaperones and teachers. In cold weather, hot chocolate will be served to students.

Amigo Centre Outdoor/Environmental Education Program

ROLE DESCRIPTION FOR CHAPERONES

Chaperones can be parents, grandparents, guardians, teachers, or any other adult selected by school personnel to come along on the trip.

Chaperones play an important role in the Amigo Centre Outdoor/ Environmental Education experience. We are grateful to you as a chaperone for your willingness to give of your time and share in the experiences of the program.

As chaperones, you are role models and are vital in helping us set a positive tone for the overall experience.

We feel it is important that you as a chaperone understand the responsibilities you carry within the program by outlining some of expectations of your role in this unique learning experience.

Classes and Activities:

We ask that each study group be accompanied by a chaperone to all classes.

Chaperones need to keep a watchful eye for inappropriate behavior at all times and be encouraged to “nip it in the bud”. The instructor may ask a chaperone to take a student aside to address inappropriate behavior. Amigo staff will look to you to care for discipline problems with students.

Chaperones are encouraged to participate in classes as appropriate. Through engaging with the students you will help nurture the students understanding and appreciation of nature.

When the instructor is sharing, all eyes and attention should be focused on the instructor.

Encourage students to adhere to the rules by respecting others and the natural environment. Chaperones will help keep students on the trail and from picking plants or getting into poison ivy.

Bells are not used to signal the start of activities. Therefore, chaperones play an important role in helping students arrive at the appropriate places on time.

If you bring a cell phone, please be discrete in the use of it. We understand that you may need to be reached at various times during the day, yet ask that you limit phone usage while assisting with classes because of the distraction to students. If you need to be on your phone, please be respectful of others and step away from the group while on the phone.

Meals:

Chaperones and teachers should disperse themselves throughout the dining hall at various tables. We ask that there be at least one adult per table at all meals. This gives students a chance to interact informally with you about their experiences. This also helps prevent potential problems.

Students (and adults) will be allowed to go back for seconds on food. We ask that you help by monitoring that only one student is up from your table at a time.

We have started a program called “Zero Food Waste” that is aimed to help raise consciousness regarding food waste. We ask that chaperones encourage students to finish what is on their plate before going back for seconds.

Overnight:

For overnight stays, it is extremely important that the students are well rested for the next day’s activities. Being exposed to the elements all day can bring on fatigue and dehydration. When it is time to turn in for the night, it’s time to go to sleep. You may find that reading to your campers is a great way of calming them and helping them drift off to sleep.

Pranks on students and other cabins are against Amigo Centre policy.

Chaperones, be firm in these areas as it is equally important for you to have a good nights rest.

Please remember to bring an alarm clock. You will be the open responsible for waking your cabin group each morning. We will ring a bell 5 minutes before it is time to be lined up for breakfast at Cabin Circle.

If showers are to be taken before bedtime, monitor the students so they are out of the showers and in their cabins by the designated time. Likewise, if students decide to take showers in the morning, be sure they are ready for breakfast at the designated time. Please discourage campers from getting up before 6:30 a.m., as this is disruptive to other campers who are still trying to sleep.

Thank You:

Once again, I want to say thanks to you for coming along and supporting your school’s experience at Amigo Centre. We could not have a successful experience without you. If you have any questions about your role, please ask an Amigo Staff person when you arrive. Thanks so much.

Shalom,

Cheryl K. Mast
