ENGLISH 101.05 SCHEDULE—Winter 2015

This schedule is incomplete: It includes most major due dates, but not all the daily activities. Each essay assignment sheet will contain more details, and in-class daily work may come up unnanounced.

Tue 1/6:Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 8, “Superstitions.” Discuss this chapter.

Wed 1/7:Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 14, “Quoting.” In-class exercises.

Thu 1/8:Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 1, “Thinking Well.” In-class exercises.

Fri 1/9: Due: Seminar paper on “The Fourth of July,” by Audre Lorde, pages 254-

258, and “A Reunion with Boredom,” by Charles Simic, pages 374-377,

in 50 Essays. Begin Essay #1 (Personal Narrative). Homework: Do the

“Generating Material” assignment in the Essay #1 Assignment sheet.

Week 2Mon 1/12Due in class: “Generating Material for Essay #1.” We will work with it in class.

Tue 1/13:Due: Read Trimble Chapters 2 and 3, “Getting Launched” and “Openers.”

In-class exercises based on these chapters.

Wed 1/14:About the thesis and organization of Essay #1: “Ant and Grasshopper” exercise.

Thu 1/15:Due: “Zero Draft” of Essay #1 in class for outlining activities.

Fri 1/16: Due: Seminar paper on “Once More to the Lake,” by E.B. White, pages

431-437, and “Joyas Voladoras,” pages 125-128, in 50 Essays.

Week 3Mon 1/19:Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. No class.

Tue 1/20:Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 4, “Middles.” In-class exercises.

Wed 1/21:Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 10, “Revising,” and Chapter 11, “Proofreading.

Thu 1/22:Due: Essay #1 (Narrative) in Workshop groups. Bring 3 copies.

Fri 1/23:Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 13, “Punctuation.” Exercises with the

material from this chapter.

Week 4Mon 1/26:More work with punctuation and sentence structure.

Tue 1/27Due: Essay #1 (Narrative). Begin Essay #2 (Review).

Wed 1/28:Practice sample worksheets.

Thu 1/29:Due: Worksheet for Essay #2.

Fri 1/30:Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 5, “Closers.” Exercises based on this chapter.

Brief introduction to ethos, pathos, and logos.
