Give it a go

(give your students the opportunity)

Sport BOP and Orienteering BOP invite you to the 2017 WBOP Inter-School Orienteering event on 19 October 2017. So it is time for schools to get teams together for this year’s event.

Course:The courses will be point-to-point orienteering courses. A different course for each year group. Entries will be allocated start times that are 1-2 minutes apart so students on the same course will not start at the same time.

  • The emphasis is on
  • map reading skills
  • orientation of the map using the surrounding features
  • decision making about

Where am I now?

Where do I need to go?

How will I get there (best course/direction)?

  • No compasses will be needed.
  • Estimated time for each course is 15 to 40 minutes.
  • The courses will include running on the slopes, tracks and farm areas of McLarenFallsPark. This may include crossing roads within the park and climbing overfences.
  • Students can run individually or in pairs but each will carry a map
  • Timing will be by Orienteering BOP’s Sport Ident electronic system. Each individual or pair will be allocated a Sport Ident (SI) card to carry and ‘dip’ into the box at the control (flag) to register they have visited the control. This replaces the clipcard and clipper system used in previous years. A demonstration of this can be seen at . In the video the SI card and is referred to as a ‘dibber’.

Event Organisers : Orienteering BOP Club members and Sport BOP staff will be available on the day to

manage the start/finish process with assistance from adult helpers from each school. Instructions will be provided. Each team will need their own manager to ensure they have everything organised and know what they are doing.

Learn about Orienteering:

We are aware that there may be varying perceptions of ‘what orienteering is all about’

The focus is on orienteering using maps (orientating and reading the map) to locate controls, not a ‘compass course’.

Indicate if you require some support to get Orienteering under way and we will make an effort to pair you with a school with some Orienteering experience.
