Statement of the Job: The primary purpose of the position is to provide effective leadership and direction for institutional advancement in support of the university’s mission and goals. The Vice President serves as the chief development officer. The Vice President is responsible for effective annual giving results, short and long-term institutional fundraising goals and objectivesas well as outreach to partnerships with the local, state, and regional donors, alumni, corporations, foundations, and community relations.

The VP of Advancement is also the President of the USM Foundation, a separate 501(c)(3), from the university. The USM Foundation accepts most major and planned gifts. In this capacity, s/he works closely with a volunteer governing board of directors. As a member of the President’s staff, s/he participates in the planning and implementation of major university policies.

Essential Functions:

  1. Design, implement, and manage all philanthropic resource development programs for the university. This includes capital campaigns or projects, annual giving, corporate and foundation giving, special gifts, planned gifts, and federal requests.
  2. Serve as the chief executive of the USM Foundation and effectively manage USM’s relationship with the foundation.
  3. Increase financial support the university receives in the private philanthropic community through regular contact with corporations, community organizations, friends of the university, and foundations.
  4. Foster alumni support of the university and serve as the primary link between the Office of the President, the Alumni Association Board of Directors, and the Alumni Association membership.
  5. Serve as the primary spokesperson and contact within the University of Maine System offices on development matters.
  6. Develop and monitor university-wide policies concerning fund-raising, and brand management activities.

Other:

  1. At the direction of the President, act as the University’s representative to designated external and internal audiences.
  2. Serve on various committees or boards in the community or on campus which are relevant to the functions of University Advancement.

SPECIAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES*:

  1. Authority to commit financial resources of $25,000 or more as provided in the campus Signature Authority matrix and/or MaineStreet Marketplace.
  2. Ability to drive a University vehicle and provide proof of a valid driver’s license.
  3. Ability to drive colleagues, students or others and provide proof of a valid driver’s license.
  4. Ability to provide own transportation (fully-insured vehicle), provide proof of a valid driver’s license, and compliance with Maine law regarding vehicle insurance.
  5. Work on federally funded projects.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Has primary supervisory responsibility for professional staff. This includes, but is not limited to, conducting performance evaluations, approving annual leave, disciplining, assigning work, providing orientation and support, providing support for professional development, demonstrating effective leadership to the unit, and overseeing hiring within University Advancement.

BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for overseeing the management of the budgets for University Advancement., and the office of the Vice President. Management of gift accounts.

PUBLIC-PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES:

Membership and active participation in national, regional, and local professional organizations related to fund-raising and external relations, such as the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and the Maine Public Relations Council (MPRC). Be active in the local and statewidecommunity serving on boards and councils representing the University.

President’s Office and cabinet members, Provost and members of the Provost’s Staff, directors, and faculty.

Key donors, corporations, foundations, local, state and national elected leaders.

  2. Demonstrated skill in executive-level management and leadership that includes inspiring and mentoring staff.
  3. Exceptional communication and critical thinking skills.

  5. Deep knowledge of trends, competitive climate, and other factors affecting advancement, fundraising, and marketing,
  6. Proficiency in data-informed decision-making.
  7. Ability to develop, articulate, and advocate compelling strategies.
  8. Demonstrated ability to implement, benchmark, access, and accept accountability for efforts and initiatives.
  9. Enthusiasm, optimism, and passion for the University of Southern Maine.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Executive experience with increasing levels of responsibility in fundraising or related field.
  • Demonstrated record of success in management and fundraising.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree or commensurate experience preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues, external agencies, various boards, external groups, and individuals.
  • Ability to develop broad and deep connections with potential donors that include businesses, alumni, and friends of the university.
  • Understanding of the role of public Metropolitan University that serves its regional needs and aspirations.
  • Knowledge of and connection to the local community.
  • Record of community service.
  • Prefer successful experience with capital campaigns and fundraising.
