Focal Wall Description

Locate the wall seen first upon entering the room. This is your focal wall, the wall that will create a lasting impression for conferees. Hang RV backdrop with bungee cords from ceiling or attach to wall. Extend a canopy over the door of RV. Lay a piece of outdoors carpeting or green cloth to create an outdoor feel. Place a small table in front of RV, cover table with a red and white checked tablecloth. Add a campstool or chair to one side of RV. Make a “campfire” in the middle of scene. Other camping items could include lanterns, flashlights, compass, binoculars, sleeping bag, fishing pole, etc. Extend a lightweight rope for hanging beach towels. Include artificial trees and greenery to compliment your campsite. Option: Place trees, painted and cut from foam board, around campsite.

Room Setup Description

Place chairs in a semi-circle facing the focal wall. To the left of the focal wall place the Crafts Souvenir Shop and Worship Rally. To the right of the focal wall place Snacks Diner and Rec Park. Place patterns on 3 tables in back of room.

Decoration Suggestions

Think “BIG”!! Oversized props add a touch of energy and excitement!!

Worship Rally

Contact a local travel agency and ask for discontinued travel posters. Obtain several styles of US maps. Mount travel posters and maps on foam board and display on easels. Over exaggerate and highlight Route 254 destinations on the map.

Roofing felt, on a roll, can be purchased to create a Route 254 road. Yellow duct tape can be used for centerline and white masking tape used for outer lines. Re-enforce one end of the road with heavy tape and add grauments, suspend from ceiling and allow remaining portion of road to flow freely across stage. Length of road will be based on size of area that is being decorated.

Draw oversized postcards on foam board or poster board representing the 5 travel destinations.

Add a directional sign pointing to familiar locations. Show distance to locations by indicating mileage on one end of each sign.

Us a water heater box to create an oversized and whimsical gas pump to place near base of the Route 254 road. Use bright colors and large numbers to emphasis

the grandeur of pump.

Place state flags throughout Worship Rally area for added color and to emphasis the travel theme.

Crafts Souvenir Shop

Using cardboard or foam board cut a large rectangle and print

“CRAFTS SOUVENIR SHOP”. Use markers or paint to create the look of a framed sign.

Using an off-white sheet or canvas tarp paint the edges with light gray paint to resemble a storefront window frame. Print CRAFTS SOUVENIR SHOP backward on sheet, when sheet is placed against the wall this will give the appearance of looking outward from a glass storefront window. Make streaks across the sheet with various colors of black, browns and grays to give the appearance of “glare” on the window.

Cover a table with burlap cloth. Place several equal size baskets or boxes on table and fill with craft supplies.

Make oversized state pennants using felt or poster board to place on wall.

To make an ole’ wooden barrel, like seen in a country candy store, wrap a large, round outdoor trash with brown craft paper. Using black and brown markers or paint, add knotholes and plank seams. Place swim noodles in barrel to add height and color to shop decor.

On a floor easel place a large “SALE TODAY” sign made from foam board.

Display at entrance to shop.

Using a project board and 3 project board headers create a shelving unit. Cut three 2-inch slits on each side flap of project board. Make sure slits are equal in distance on both flaps. Cut first slip about 3 inches from bottom of project board and place other slits at equal distance of about 12 inches. Set project board upright and gently slide headers into slots, shelves will extend 2 – 3 inches beyond flap on each side. Display samples of Route 254 crafts on shelves.

Make table tent signs listing the name of daily craft projects. Set beside craft project samples.

Make oversized and whimsical sales tags to hang from a few items in shop.

Travel posters can be added to the wall to fill in space and add color.

From foam board cut a 12 x 6 inch sign. On one side write “WE’RE OPEN” and on the other side write “SORRY WE’RE CLOSED”. Lightly trim edge of sign with brown shoe polish to give a worn look, add a few streaks of white shoe polish to finish the look. Attach a string from each corner and hang on door.

Snacks Diner

Cut a 16 x 16 square from poster board or foam board and print “SNACKS DINER”. Using markers put a checkerboard pattern around edge for a nostalgic look. Attach a string to each side of sign and hang on door.

Make a “sandwich board” from two large pieces of foam board. Attach the two boards at the top with packing tape. Write “DAILY SPECIALS” or “FEATURED ITEM OF THE DAY” on board. Display in front of diner.

To create a retro feel for walls and/or floors cut 12 x 12 inch black and white squares from heavy paper or lightweight poster board.

Place old 45 records around walls to give a nostalgic feel.

Make a table by cutting a 36-inch circle from foam board. Turn a packing box up right and place circle on top, cover with a bright pink cloth that reaches the floor. Place table in center of black and white floor and place 2 soda glasses with straws on table. Make a large whimsical menu for the center of table by cutting a 12 x 9-inch piece of black foam board and creasing to fold. Add pink lettering to front of menu that says “SNACKS DINER”, set menu upright in the center of table.

Create a diner counter by spray painting a large refrigerator box light gray. Add strips of dark gray electrical tape to create a chrome effect. Set on its side to resemble a counter. Place a tray of Route 254 snacks on the counter. Add a 12 x 9 inch sandwich board with the words “CHECK-OUT” at one end of counter.

Rec Park

Make a recreation backdrop using a white sheet or a canvas tarp. Paint trees, a field, water and sky. Attach to wall or suspend from ceiling with bungee cords.

Using cardboard or foam board cut a jagged edge 15 x 7 inch sign. Print “REC PARK”. Use markers to create the look of weathered board.

Make an equipment shack from a refrigerator box. Spray paint box brown and use markers or paint to create the look of weathered boards. Paint a “RENTALS” sign above shack door with white/gray paint.

Cut a piece of green outdoor carpet and place in front of equipment shack.

Place outdoor equipment against shack: fishing poles, rackets, vests, inflatable rafts, beach balls, swim rings, etc.

To make a directional sign paint a yardstick white and place in a small pale of sand.

Cut five 12 x 3 inch signs from white foam board and attack to yard stick with velcro. Print the following activities on signs: Hiking, Swimming, Boating, Archery and Horseback Riding.

Place artificial trees and greenery in scene to create an outdoor atmosphere in Rec

Park.

BIBLE STUDY CAMPSITE

Using cardboard or foam board cut a jagged edge 15 x 7 inch sign. Print “BIBLE STUDY CAMPSITE” on sign. Use markers or paint to create the look of weathered wood. Attach sign to a paint stir stick and place in campsite.

On a white sheet or a canvas tarp paint a backdrop of trees, sky and split rail fence. Place on wall or hang from ceiling with bungee cords.

In front of backdrop place a popup tent. Pull the tent door back to reveal a sleeping bag.

Place a piece of green outdoor carpet, artificial trees and greenery to create an outdoor atmosphere.

Place a red and white checked tablecloth on ground. Set a picnic basket on top of tablecloth.

Prop a fishing pole against tent.

To create a campfire crumble, tightly, brown paper bags to resemble rocks and place in a circle in front of tent. Add twigs and sticks to the center of rocks. Crumble and place orange and yellow tissue paper under sticks and twigs to give the look of a fire.

Teaching Procedures

Step 1 (5 minutes)

·  Have Route 254 music play

·  Greet conferees at the door and welcome them to Route 254

·  Encourage conferees to take a close look at all the decorations

·  Ask conferees to introduce themselves and describe themselves with a color

Say: “I can tell we have a colorful group with us tonight and we are going to have a great time together as we talk and share budget friendly and travel friendly ideas for decorating Club VBS: Route 254.”

Step 2 (5 minutes)

Say: “I would like to read Psalm 25:4 to you. (HCSB)

Make your way know to me, Lord,

Teach me your path.

Yes, even in decorating for Club VBS. I don’t believe there is one obstacle that we can’t overcome when we approach God and ask Him to reveal Himself to us; when we ask Him to show us His way; when we ask Him to guide us and teach us. I believe when we do these things God will be honored and glorified ….even through our decorations.”

Pray – Pray for conferees and conference time together.

Step 3 (10 minutes)

Have conferees to move to one of the tear sheets on the wall. Give them 5 minutes to complete their assignment. Play Route 254 music softly while conferees work on assignments. Ask them to return to their seats when the music stops. Ask conferees to share their thoughts and ideas they have listed.

Comment about the wonderful ideas and suggestions they have for decorating Route 254.
