THE SIXTH EAST AFRICA HEALTHCARE FEDERATION CONFERENCE AND PHARMEX EXHIBITION, DAR ES SALAAM – TANZANIA: JULY 24TH – 25TH 2017
1.0. An Overview of the East Africa Healthcare Federation Conference (EAHF)
Since the re-formation of the East African Community, member states have consistently emphasized on the integration agenda.
The potential of the private health sector in propelling these countries towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as in meeting their respective national health agenda is being explored and developed at various platforms with government partners. Such fora are propelling the development of the health sector in their respective countries and in the whole of the Eastern African Region.
The 1st East Africa Healthcare Federation conference took place in Kampala Uganda on May 3rd, 2012, and since then the East Africa Healthcare Federation (EAHF) has held annual conferences in members’ states, bringing together health care stakeholders from all over the region and beyond. Initially with only three founding member states, the federation has now membership of all the six East African countries, with the Ethiopia Healthcare Federation joining the EAHF officially in 2017. EAHF is now formed by APHFTA- The Tanzania Private Health Sector, Kenya Healthcare Federation (KHF), Uganda Healthcare Federation (UHF), Rwanda Healthcare Federation (RHF), Burundi Healthcare Federation (In Formation), the South Sudan Private Healthcare Practitioners Association and the Ethiopia Healthcare Federation. EAHF unifies East Africa private healthcare players, bringing together all the stakeholders at the EAHF Conference to discuss the health business agenda, and big business transactions take place at the event.
The 6th East African Healthcare Federation Conference and PHARMEX exhibition took place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 24th to 25th July 2017 at Hyatt Regency Hotel. The Association of Private Health Facilities in Tanzania (APHFTA) was the hosted. In attendance were renowned professionals from East Africa and abroad.
The conference aimed at promoting the business of health in East Africa by bringing together the Healthcare stakeholders from the East African region and beyond to actively participate in knowledge sharing, propagate new advances in the healthcare industry and enhance partnerships.
The theme of the Conference was “Health Care Financing: For Sustainable Quality Health Care” and it was subdivided into the following Sub Themes:
Access to Quality Health Care
Advances in Healthcare Technology
Equitable Healthcare Financing
The expected outcome of the conference was “a Strengthened Health Agenda towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Africa, through a flourishing private health sector.”
More than five hundred participants attended the conference.
The Guest of Honor, H.E. Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the former president of the Republic of Tanzania, together with Hon. Ummy Mwalimu, the Minister of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, H.E. Einar Hebogard Jensen, the Ambassador of Denmark to Tanzania, Prof. Khama Rogo, Lead Health Sector Specialist at the the World Bank and Head of Health in Africa Initiative, Dr. Gayle Martin, Senior Economist at the World Bank, and Lilian Awinja, the Executive Director of East Africa Business Council, were among the high level officials in attendance, who also had time deliver powerful speeches at the conference.
The 2018 East Africa Healthcare Federation will be hosted by Ethiopia Healthcare Federation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
