A RESOLUTION declaring January 29, 2004 as Preservation Day in Kentucky and adjourning the House of Representatives in honor of the Kentucky Heritage Council and the Renaissance Kentucky Main Street Program.

WHEREAS, Kentucky's preservation efforts include: the fourth highest number of listings in the National Register of Historic Places; 30 National Historic Landmarks; the oldest statewide main street program, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary; and the innumerable persons and organizations who dedicate themselves to preserving historic places and a sense of heritage; and

WHEREAS, Kentucky has a significant number of historic places throughout the Commonwealth that are worthy of preservation and useful to the ongoing economic health of our communities; and

WHEREAS, it is important for the citizens of the Commonwealth to be reminded of the value of these historic places and to have opportunities to learn more about our heritage as Kentuckians as reflected in these buildings, sites, structures and places; and

WHEREAS, communities that protect their historic fabric and encourage investment in historic preservation efforts are consistently demonstrating an improved quality of life for their citizens; and

WHEREAS, historic preservation projects are proven economic generators that work to create jobs, attract investment, stimulate tourism, attract new businesses, increase property values, and improve the economic climate of a community; and

WHEREAS, historic preservation strategies can be a part of managing growth and development through creating incentives for investment in the historic areas of a community; and

WHEREAS, representatives from communities throughout the Commonwealth will attend the Renaissance Kentucky Main Street Program Winter Meeting on January 28 to January 30, 2004;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives recognizes and applauds the Kentucky Heritage Council and the State Historic Preservation Office for their many years of dedicated service to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and does hereby declare, Thursday, January 29, 2004 as Preservation Day in Kentucky.

Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in honor of the Kentucky Heritage Council and the Renaissance Kentucky Main Street Program.

Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mr. David L. Morgan, Executive Director, Heritage Council, 300 Washington Street, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601.
