ELL Poster #8– Use Words
Have children work on words lists individually or in pairs. Ask children to list any nouns that they see in the poster. More advanced students can make list of verbs that they see in the poster as well as the nouns. Then have children pick a situation in the poster and describe what is happening.
High Frequency

Divide children into pairs and give two Word Cards (ELL Teaching Guide pg 53) to each child. Have each child mix up the cards and place them in a pile face down. Players each turn one card face up at the same time. If the words on the cards match, players say the word aloud. The player who says the word first gets the pair of cards. If the words no not mach, players should remain silent. If both players remain silent, no one gets the cards. If both players say a word when they should not, no one gets the card. If one player accidentally says a word, the other player gets the pair of cards. Play continues with unmatched cards until no more matches are possible. The player who has collected the most card wins.
Reading Comprehension / Today we are going to be talking about sequence of the story
Turtle’s Race with Beaver
What happens at the beginning of the story? Turtle lives in a beautiful pond,
that she loves. One year as she always did, buried herself in the mud at
the bottom of the pond. While Turtle was sleeping Beaver came and made a
new home for himself by building a dam.
What happens next? When Turtle awoke, it took her longer to get to the
top of the pond because the pond was deeper because of Beaver’s dam.
What did Turtle do then? She asked Beaver if they could share the pond.
Beaver said no, but he challenged Turtle to a race. The winner would get to
stay at the pond.
How do the other animals find out about the race? Beaver tells them. Then
Each animal tells another animal, so word spreads quickly.
Why do you think Beaver tells the other animals about the race? He thinks
He’s going to win and wants to show off to all the other animals.
What happens before Beaver enters the water? Turtle bites Beaver’s tail and
holds on to it. As Beaver swims, Turtle is able to keep up with Beaver.
How does Turtle win the race? Turtle bites Beaver’s tail hard because she
knows it will hurt Beaver and he will fling his tail. That way she’ll be thrown
across the finish line first.
How does the story end? Turtle offers to share the pond with Beaver, but he
is too embarrassed. Turtle lives in her beautiful pond, and Beaver finds a new
pond to share with another turtle.
Grammar and Writing / Singular and Plural Nouns

A singular noun names one person, place, animal, or thing. A noun that names
more than one is called a plural noun.
Give examples:
Cat ( one – singular ) kittens – more than one -plural
Have students write complete sentences. Have students label each noun singular or plural in the sentence.
Model:
The animals came to watch the race. animals – more than one - plural
The pond got deeper and deeper – pond – one - singular
