CUVERVILLE ISLAND is a dark rocky island lying in the Errera Channel between the Arctowski Peninsula and the northern part of Rongé Island off the west coast of Graham Land. The island was discovered by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition (1897-1899) under Adrien de Gerlache, who named it for J.M.A Cavelier de Cuverville, a vice admiral of the French Navy.

PORT LOCKROY is situated on the small Goudier Island and is maintained and manned by the British Antarctic Heritage Trust. It has a post office and is one of the few places in Antarctica where you can post mail. Until 1931 Lochroy was a major harbour for whalers and evidence of that period can still be seen. The main hut was named Bransfield House after the ship initially chartered to transport members of Operation Tabarin from the U.K, and itself named after Edward Bransfield, Master with the Royal Navy and the first person to chart an area of the Antarctic mainland between 1819 and 1920. The main residents are the Gentoo penguins who ‘reside’ next to the station.

14:00 This afternoon we hope to make a landing on Goudier Island and visit Bransfield House at Port Lochroy which involves some climbing over potentially slippery rocks near the landing site. As you can appreciate it would be impossible to get all our guests into Bransfiel;d House at the same time!

“Here is scenery which, on a crystal clear day, must hold its own with any in the world. We gaze and drink it in; there is a hush as we who have not seen it before stand in a group and watch it unfold.”

Sir Alister Hardy, 1967
