Man 1: Well, I found the holiday of my dreams!

Man 2: On no, not another one of your crazy trips.

Man 1: This one isn't crazy, it's educational. You can go with The Great Canadian Adventure Company in a small research boat underwater to study the wreckage of the Titanic up close and personal!

Man 2: Wow, that sounds exciting! You should go for it then.

Man 1: There's only one problem...

Man 2: What's that?

Man 1: It costs $40,000 to participate!

2.

Man 1: Are you excited about flying to Australia?

Man 2: Of course. I've never been on a plane before.

Man 1: Are you scared?

Man 2: Not at all. I'm really looking forward to it.

Man 1: It'll be a long flight to Sydney. That will be really boring. Do you have any stops?

Man 2: Yes we stop in Dubai for a few hours.

Man 1: Nice. You can do some shopping at the airport while you're waiting.

3.

Man: That's right, I need to change the date of the ticket. I need to be home earlier than the 25th. Is it possible to return on the 23rd? (pause) Hmm.... that's too bad. I suppose I could do the 20th, if I can change the arrival date to the 15th. (pause) Really? Great, as long as I'm there five days, it doesn't really matter when I get there or leave. I still get the window seat, right?

4.

Man 1: I used the finger scanner at the supermarket the other day, it's really cool.

Man 2: I read about those. They've been around for a while now. I still don't like the idea of a machine scanning your fingerprint. It's like someone is following your every move.

Man 1: But it's so convenient! It knows who you are, and takes the money right from your bank account. You don't need to carry money or anything with you ever again!

Man 2: But isn't it dangerous?

Man 1: Of course not. It's easier for someone to steal your credit card than your fingerprint.

Listening transcript

Brad: Hey Ian, did you watch this week’s documentary?

Ian: No, I rarely watch them any more.

Brad: Why not? They are both educational and fun.

Ian: I know but I’ve got hardly any free time. I have been very busy lately. Anyway did you watch it?

Brad: Yes, I did. In fact, I think you would have liked this week’s programme. It was called ‘Heroes’.

Ian: Sounds interesting. What was it about?

Brad: It was about doctors who travel to remote areas of the country and offer their services to those in need.

Ian: I cannot imagine that there are many doctors who are willing to leave the comfort of their homes and visit remote communities.

Brad: No, unfortunately, there aren’t. And the programme focused on the many difficulties these doctors face.

Ian: What sort of difficulties?

Brad: Well, in many of those areas there isn’t enough equipment. So doctors have to carry as much medicine and equipment as they can.

Ian: That can be very difficult.

Brad: It can indeed. And most of the doctors are novices. That means they don’t have enough experience to treat all the patients they come across.

Ian: Yes, but at least they are able to offer them some first aid.

Brad: That’s right and this helps save many lives.

Ian: Well, it must be a rewarding job. Makes you wish you were a doctor, doesn’t it?

Brad: It sure does.

1. Man 1: How's your new job as an assistant going?

Man 2: It's OK. It's typical office stuff.

Man 2: Occasionally. Mostly I just answer phones.

2. Man: Have you decided what to get your mum?

Boy: Well, she loves reading, so I was thinking of getting her a book.

Man: Why don't you get her a nice pair of earrings?

Boy: I got her earrings last year.

Man: How about a bag then?

Boy: My mum's really difficult when it comes to bags. No, I think I'm going to stay with my first
choice.

Man 2: Actually, I like Art more.

Man 1: What about Literature?

5. Man: Hello Alex. It's James. Listen, I know I said I'd come over to your place at 6 o'clock but something's come up at work and I have to stay here until 6:30, which means I can't be at your house before 7. If that's too late for you, let me know and we'll arrange to meet some other time.

Man 1: Look at that flash of lightning!

Man 2: I know; isn't it spectacular?

Man 1: I don't know about that. It's quite frightening, actually. Don't you think we should go inside or something? We might get struck by lightning. Look! That tree was nearly hit.

Man 2: I suppose you're right; we can watch the lightning from the window. Let's go.

2.

Man 1: Is that a fox over there?

Man 2: Yes it is. How strange! We are in the middle of the city. It must be lost.

Man 1: Maybe it came from that big park over there.

Man 2: It's nice to see a bit of wildlife in the city.

Man 1: I hope it will be all right, though, with all these cars about.

Man 2: I hope it doesn't try to eat any of that litter. It could get sick.

3.

Man 1: Look at that sunset! Isn't it beautiful?

Man 2: I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it.

Man 1: It was a good idea to book this bungalow for the night.

Man 2: Yes, I agree. Tomorrow we are back at the hotel but on Tuesday we are going on that trek into the jungle and we'll be camping.

4.

Man 1: So what's your project about?

Man 2: It's about protecting endangered species, in particular, the black jaguar.

Man 1: That's interesting. I took part in a conservation project last year in Africa. I was on a team monitoring the gorilla population. I really enjoyed it and I got to meet some interesting people. This summer I'm going to Greece to help a team working with turtles.

5.

Man 1: I can't believe how much snow there is outside.

Man 2: I know, they said on the news that there hasn't been such a severe snowstorm in the country for 60 years.

Man 1: And it's so cold for this time of year.

Man 2: It's all because of climate change. But are we doing anything to protect the environment? No! We simply don't care! Unless we start doing something about the environment, we are going to see even more extreme weather changes in the future. Scientists predict floods and severe heat waves.

Listening transcript

Don: Welcome to our show today, Dr. Walter Ellis.

Walter: Thanks for having me, Don.

Don: Today we’re talking about intelligence on our show. I know there are a lot of ways of finding out exactly how smart a person is. What do you think is the best way to see how smart we are?

Walter: Well, Don, that depends on what kind of smart you mean. The most common test is the IQ test. It’s not exactly a test that tells you how smart you are. It doesn’t test knowledge on a particular subject. It’s a test that measures how quickly you can solve different kinds of problems. The score you get is what we call a person’s IQ.
