First: Synopsis of Subjects

With the rapid economic development of our country, the tourism industry has grown dramatically. Therefore, qualified manpower concerned is in urgent need.The Master Degree Program entitled “Tourism Management” in SMU was approved in 2011 and started to enroll students in 2012. There are two professors, one associate professor, four lecturers under the program now.

Presently, there are three research areas designed within this program.Firstly,Ocean Tourism Development and Planning, emphasizes not only the significance, characteristics and regulations in the development of ocean tourism but also the resource allocation, service improvement and managerial efficiency concerned. In addition,tourist destination image design in waterfront, tourism program development as well as the tourism planning technology and tourism management are included too.Secondly, Water Tourism Management——Combined with water tourism product innovation and market studies of water tourism development,theories and methodologies of operation and management in enterprises specializing in tourism shipping and waterfront tourism are researched.Thirdly,Cruise CatamaranOperations, i.e. a research on the operationaland technical phenomena in cruise companies, related legal issues in particular and the strategic policies and commerciallaws related to the development of cruise servicesin general are conducted.

Second: Educational Objectives

After two years’ study, the graduates of this program are expected to be qualified managers, promising entrepreneurs or other professionals,with high-standard commercial ethics, hardworking spirits, good vision and solid academic foundation in Ocean tourism industry, water tourism and waterfront development and management fields, professional technical-working areas and teaching and researching domains.

Postgraduates’ practical ability fortourism management discipline can be developed mainly by the Enterprise access and social investigation organized by university or tutors and by taking related scientific research project.Besides, combined with our running featurespractice or trainee in related water tourism enterprises should be organized for 1-2times.Of course, postgraduates can get a short-time practice by self-contacting to develop the practical ability.The postgraduates’ practical ability development in our university should lay particular stress on aspects such as Water (waterfront) tourism management,Ocean (coastal) tourism development and managementas well as economic activity analysis and management of cruise and yacht and etc.The goal of grasping the knowledge in the research domain mentioned above as well as the exercise and ascension of practical ability should be achieved after practicing.
