How do drivers in Singapore save fuel? How far are drivers willing to go to get the most out of every tank? The Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report surveyed 1,000 drivers in Singapore to answer these questions. The surprising finding was: 8 in 10 drivers think they are fuel efficient. But 9 in 10 drivers actually practise driving habits that consume more fuel than they believe. Here, we debunk some of Singapore’s most common fuel efficiency myths.

DO YOU THINK IT’S MORE FUEL EFFICIENT TO LEAVE YOUR ENGINE RUNNING WHEN IDLE, OR TO SWITCH IT OFF?

Mid-shot of a young man wearing a checkered long sleeved shirt with trees in the background.

[Male Speaker 1]

I believe that you should leave the engine on instead of turning it off, because when you turn the engine on and off you’re actually using more energy.

Mid-shot of a young man wearing a white long sleeved shirt with the Singapore River in the background.

[Male Speaker 2]

I believe that if you on it it’s better. If you on and off, maybe it takes a longer time, so you consume a lot of energy.

Mid-shot of a woman wearing a red shirt with houses and cars in the background.

[Female Speaker 1]

I think I’ll leave it on, because to me I think if I switch it on and off it will actually waste more energy.

ENGINE RUNNING

Mid-shot of a woman with a lab coat. Screeners appear from the right introducing her as “Mae Ascan, Shell Fuels Scientist”

[Voiceover]

9 in 10 drivers surveyed prefer to keep their engines running to avoid frequent restarts. Are you really saving fuel? Let’s find out. Join our Shell Fuels Scientist, Mae, to get to the bottom of this.

Wide shot of woman with a lab coat pointing at several lamps. Camera takes a Close Up shot of her, and scene changes into a shot of her turning on the switch. Shows comparison between Lamp A and Lamp B and the energy monitors.

[Mae]

Imagine these lamps are car engines. We’ll leave one of them switched on, and the other we turn on and off. Using energy monitors, we are able to track which lamp uses more energy.

As seen from this experiment, the lamp that has been switched off and on again uses less energy as compared to the lamp that has been left switched on. Similarly for cars, you actually use more fuel when you leave your engine running than restarting it again. As a general rule of thumb, you should switch off your engine if you need to stop for more than one minute.

FACT: IT IS MORE FUEL EFFICIENT TO TURN OFF YOUR ENGINE WHEN STATIONARY AND RESTART WHEN YOU NEED IT.

Practise the right fuel saving tips and use an efficient fuel like Shell FuelSave and you can get the most out of every tank.

Ok, alright.

Thank you, that’s great.
