Comprehension Strategies

:Use Fix-It Strategies

When you use a fix-it strategy, you useinformation in a passage to figure out the meaning of a new word. For example, Read this passage from “Why the Lanternfish Gives Off Light—A Cajun

Folktale.” Fish didn’t realize that the brilliant pearls he had swallowed were shining through his scales. And that is why today the luminous lanternfish of the deep gives off light. By reading on, you can figure out that luminous means glowing.

Create Images

When you create images you think about how things look, sound, feel, smell, and taste.

Target Skills

Recognize Dialect

A dialect is distinguished by its vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. For example, “Dis is my home,” Fish proclaimed defiantly. And, “Please, Daddy. I want to go up dare. I’m terribly scared of da dark!” Both of these are examples of dialect.

Understand Simile

A simile is a comparison using like or as. An example of a simile is; Its blue-black body was like the midnight sky.

When you revise, you should read your draft and look for ways to make it better.

• Add, change, move, or delete information.

• Make sure your draft is appropriate to your audience and purpose.

• Check for details of your writing form.

Organizational Pattern: Cause and Effect

The effect is what happens and the cause is why it happens. Read this passage: The plates float on hot liquid rock, called “magma.” Since the continents and oceans are on top of the plates, the shape of the land and water changes as the plates move. This passage is an example of using cause and effect to organize the writing.

Word Study

Inflected Endings: -ed, -ing, and –s

An inflected ending is a word part that is added to the end of a root word. It changes the root word in some way. It is sometimes necessary to change the spelling of the root word when adding an ending.

Adjectives

An adjective is a word that describes nouns or pronouns. Adjectives answer one of the three questions: What kind? How many? Which One?

Irregular Verbs

An irregular verb is one where the spelling completely changes when you change the tense. For example: shake and shook or eat and ate. To change the tense of an irregular verb you do not just add –ed or –ing.

Vocabulary Words

Week 1

1) environment – n., the surroundings of living things

2) niche – n., a specific place in which a plant or animal lives

3) camouflage – n., a covering, such as skin color or patterns, that helps something hide in its environment

4) transparent – adj., to see right through something

5) conserve – v., to use as little as possible

Week 2

1) depth – n., the distance from top to bottom or front to back

2) beneath – adj., to be under something

3) dependent – adj., to rely on someone or something for what you need

4) scavenge – v., to search for something useful, such as food

5) endangered – adj., to be in danger of disappearing from existence

To pass the theme test, students must get at least 18 out of the 25 questions correct. All the information on this study guide will be on the test. Please make sure your child spends some time reviewing this study guide before taking the test.
