OVERSEAS TOUR 2013: NETHERLANDS

Details: The Prehistoric Society is delighted to announce its tour of the prehistory of the Netherlands which will include visits to the National Museum of Antiquities, a reception at Leiden University, the Iron Age terpen landscape of Friesland, megalithic monuments and barrows at Bronneger, the medieval museum village/Iron Age house reconstruction at Orvelte, museum in Nijmegen, Hallstatt tombs of Oss and a visit to the Maaskant project with reception.Please see the society website contact () for further details of the programme.

Tour Fees: The fee includesbed and breakfast accommodation, coach transport, lunches, study tour notes and all entrance to sites and museums.In order to keep costs down and allow flexibility for participants, these fees do notinclude the costs of evening mealsOR flights/transport to the Netherlands.

Also included is an introductory lecture by Prof. Harry Fokkens, scheduled for the evening of Wednesday27thFeb. 2013at the Society of Antiquaries, London.

Tour Guide: Harry Fokkensis Professor in European Prehistory at the University of Leiden. His research focuses on settlement and landscape,with an emphasis on later Prehistory (2900 BC – 250 AD). Since 1986 he has been the leader of one of the most extensive excavation projects in the Netherlands, the Maaskant Project, with the excavations at Oss at its centre. In this region, 60 ha have been excavated, shedding light on the origin and development of the cultural landscape from 2500 BC to 250 AD. He has also led a research project on the Bronze Age in the Dutch River area. Presently he is leading a research project on the Bronze Age in West-Frisia. Other experts (Dr Fontijn and Dr Bourgeois) will also guide the tour on visits to their own projects.
