technology development has consistently enabled and increased its prevalence.
Iwould guess that perhaps the "Sleddog Spell" was more-or-lessunder control
[most rural folk didn't take it too seriously (i.e. the ‘herding’ of attitudes by
newspapers [then mostly owned by local magnates] was no big deal)]prior to the
explosion ofdevelopments that marked the birth of modern 'nation-states' in the
latter 19thcentury. Since then, 'They' (first capitalists; then everywhere) have
pretty muchhad a "fast-forward" button (over 'their' respective populaces) at their
disposal.

Say, for the sake of argument, that most Americans, perhaps '90%', had 'deterministic' philos. attitudes about 100 yrs. ago, c.1910… with only about 10%[MW3] of the adult population really into 'wheel-spinning', 'info-overloaded', Babbit-esque hyper-busy-ism, hail-Mary's, counting their steps, or other structural-philos. insecurities, such as an undue focus on 'keeping up with the Jonses'… Perhaps overwhelmingly deterministic basic attitudes was 'normal' for a still (approx. 50%) rural-based, 'Jeffersonian' society. Clearly RC[2]-type attitudes will incr. in 'most of the people, most of the time', as a society initially URBANizes. But when, if ever, does it stop increasing?... short of 100%... short of "all of the people, all of the time"?[MW4]
Perhaps one can already see where the chart below will be heading… and that it is, first & foremost, a phenomenon/side effect of, for the most part, Urbanization.[MW5] What a British traveler friend of mine once termed the "alligator grabbed my leg" [Y6]issue in, a State society, typically starts substantially diminishing at around the 50% urban(ization) mark… whereupon the people's 'survival senses' [and some might even say 'common sense'] correspondingly diminish, as they, their neighbors, and society in general is domesticated[3]. Let's say, after crossing 50-sth.% urbanization, a society's 'alligator grabbed my leg' (say, in the form of a corrupt policeman demanding a substantial bribe)[MW7] consciousness is gradually reduced, year-by-year, until it lays mostly dormant or moribund, perhaps even for decades. It seems, however, that this is not the end of the story/phenomenon. As a state nears a final or penultimate 99-100% urban mark, many state-corruption-malfeasance issues (basically abusing positions of power/leadership)- perhaps covered up, ignored, or papered-over for decades- begin to re-appear[Y8], as if on cue to 'speak now or forever hold your peace'.
The following chart takes a proverbial S.W.A.G. at this serious philosophical & societal (development) issue, the main issue being that, quite simply,over-burdening minds closes them. In our evolutionary Hunter-Gatherer millennia [100% rural], we were as open-minded as one could possibly imagine. Must it follow that, in a coming de-volutionary, 100% urban environment, that 'we' [not to incl. the '1% elite'] will be as closed and narrow-minded as any of our grandparents or ancestors could ever imagine? Would any kind of informed citizenship, constitutional democracy, or even public debate beconceivable, yet alone feasible, beyond the merely local? These- not some coke-fix derivatives bankers- are the real issues driving the demise (and possible breakup) of American public society.

Later that month (Jan. 2013), Paul Levy[15] presented his concept of wetiko- a covert, mind-virus that operates ‘through the unconscious blind spots in the human psyche, rendering people oblivious to their own [socially accepted/tolerated/unnoticed] madness and compelling them to act against their own best interests.’[MW14]-
That sort of thing [socially accepted mind virus] is dispersed through the ‘idiot box’ all the time, right? ADDENDUM-2- “Another ‘old’ CMC Imposition/False Dichotomy” [2/13 Kunming]
According to traditional western cosmology-ethics, at least as propagated in CMC anyway, there are two types of men in regards to “the” state and its (then) century-long encroachment upon the affairs of human beings: those who *surrender* (“Let it Be”) and those who *retreat* (“I was Born under a Wand’rin' Star”)- literally the #2 and #1 UK-Ireland singles, respectively, for most of March, 1970… a momentous time, the early ‘70s, as the first Earth Day was right around the corner, and Watergate dirty politics tip-of-the-iceberg not long after that. Plenty of pre-fab CMC role models for each of those two paths.
I propose, after some time spent in each of those camps, that there is a worthwhile 3rd Way, to confront the (early) ‘modern’ oligarchical state with the errs of its ways (obviously not bomb-throwing or other fast tracks to the oligarchs’ useful idiots list).
