A Celebration of International Education Week

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education to promote global understanding through international education and exchange. To highlight the importance of international education at CreightonUniversity, the Office of International Programs and other academic departments and groups are sponsoring special events beginning Monday, November 13th.

1:15-2:00 p.m. “Creighton Summer School in Ireland” - Dr. David Gardiner and past student participants will talk about the Irish Summer School, where Creighton students go to attend classes at Trinity College to learn how twenty-first century Ireland is cultivating its culture.— Skutt Student Center, Rm. 105

3:30-4:15 p.m. Culture Series: New Zealand—Ashley Nielsen will talk about her experiences while studying abroad in NewZealand.–SkuttStudentCenter, Rm. 104

7:00-8:00 p.m. Culture Series: Ireland—Catherine O’Neill, Samantha Peterson, Kate Ryan and Kelli Mutchler, students returning from study abroad, share their experiences during their program at the University of Limerick in Ireland.—Skutt Student Center, Rm. 104

2:30-3:15 p.m. Culture Series: Lithuania—Jurgis Vilcinskas, an exchange student from Vilnius University in Lithuania, will speak about Lithuania’s regional stance, foreign policy, modernization, people, etc. –Skutt Student Center, Rm. 104

4:00-4:45 p.m. Culture Series: Dominican Republic—Margarita Dubocq, Program Coordinator, Institute For Latin American Concern (ILAC), and international students from the Dominican Republic, will speak about the D.R.—Skutt Student Center, Rm. 104

2:30-3:45 p.m. Culture Series: China—Dr. Jinmei Yuan will give a presentation on the faculty-led trip to China this summer. Diane Mora, who extended her stay beyond the end of the program, will talk about what she experienced while teaching with the Soong Ching Ling Foundation and for Mary Knoll in Jiangmen, her participation in a silent retreat at Xavier House on the Chong Chau Island of Hong Kong, her work with the Hsing Hue Leprosarium Village, and her research at the Holy Spirit Study Center.SkuttStudentCenter, Rm. 104

4:00-5:30 p.m. Public Reading by James Norcliffe- co-sponsored by CreightonUniversity’s AsianWorldCenter (Dr. Maorong Jiang, Director) and the International Writing Program, University of Iowa.James Norcliffe, a poet, novelist, fiction writer, editor and Chinese interpreter who was born in New Zealand, has published five collections of poetry, a collection of short stories, and five novels for young adults. His writings are widely known in the U.S. and New Zealand. He has been awarded the Lillian Ida Smith Award (1990), the Robert Burns Fellowship (2000), and the Christchurch Press Literary Liaisons Honour Award (2003). A member and officer of the New Zealand Society of Authors, he is currently the president of the New Zealand Poetry Society. SkuttStudentCenter, Rm. 209
