The Maryland-NationalCapitalPark and Planning Commission, a five time National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Medal Award Winner, is seeking a Deputy Director of Operations for the Montgomery County Department of Parks. The Montgomery County Department of Parks serves a diverse population of approximately 930,000 residents by managing more than 415 parks on over 35,000 acres of parkland.

The Montgomery County Department of Parks serves close to a million visitors per year, with an annual operating budget of about $90 million, and a career staff of more than 700 employees.

Park facilities and amenities include 457 miles of streams, 305 tennis courts, 298 athletic fields, 291 playgrounds, 208 basketball courts, 189 miles of paved and natural surface trails, 114 picnic areas, 155 historic structures, 102 campsites, and 31 park activity buildings, as well as nature centers, miniature trains, indoor tennis facilities, boat rental facilities, indoor and open air ice rinks, event centers, public gardens, lakes, ponds and more.

The mission of the Montgomery County Department of Parks is: to protect and interpret our valuable natural and cultural resources; balance the demand for recreation with the need for conservation; offer a variety of enjoyable recreational activities that encourage healthy lifestyles; and provide clean, safe, and accessible places for leisure-time activities.

Under supervision of the Director of Parks, the successful candidate will plan, organize and direct the work program of several operational divisions; oversee the management of Department of Parks operations and develop new programs; serve as a key advocate for balancing parkland stewardship with active and passive recreational usage; be adept at working with a diverse park customer base; and have substantial leadership experience in managing complex organizations. A thorough knowledge of park management, personnel and budget administration, environmental issues, stewardship, horticulture, recreation, safety procedures and emergency operations is necessary to perform the duties of this high-level position.

We are looking for a Parks professional who has solid experience in developing, implementing, and interpreting goals, objectives, policies, procedures, work standards, and internal controls; and who can analyze complex administrative problems, evaluate alternatives, and recommend effective courses of action.
The incumbent must establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Planning Board, County Council, individual citizens, community groups, and other public agency representatives.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in park administration, public administration, or closely related field (Master's desirable); and
2. Six years’ experience that included a broad range and variety of park administration experience (parks, recreation, natural science), four years of which included park administration experience at the management level; or
3. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
4. Valid Maryland driver's license or the ability to acquire one.
