The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge:- Saturday 8th September 2018

The Yorkshire 3 Peaks offers a flexible approach for those wishing to undertake the challenge. Most walkers choose to start with Pen-y-ghent before moving on to Whernside and finishing with Ingleborough.

The Yorkshire 3 Peaks are commonly completed in the order above, and will be completed this way on this challenge.

We will therefore commence this personal journey at Horton-in-Ribblesdale (Pen-y-ghent.)

What are theYorkshire Three Peaks?

This stunning walk takes those that undertake it up 3 separate summits:

•Pen-y-ghent (694 metres or 2,276 feet)

•Whernside (736 metres or 2,415 feet)

•Ingleborough (723 metres 2,372 feet)

TheYorkshire Three Peaks Challenge

We will meet all the challengers at CAFT or at the Car Park in Horton-in-RibblesdaleBD24 0HF

Height restrictions: None

£5.00 Parking charge for 24 hours

This will be the starting point of Pen-y-ghent, (the 1st of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks).

Upon completion of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge you will have climbed over 5,000 feet (1,600 metres) and travelled a distance of 24.5 miles.

The terrain offers its own unique challenge with different accented elevations and descents. All pathways are clearly marked, and clear signage is everywhere, always pointing you in the right direction.

Tradition dictates that the challenge should be completed in 12 hours.

PLEASE NOTE: Participants should ensure that they book in and out at the Pen-y-ghent Cafe in Horton-in-Ribblesdale before they undertake and after they complete the challenge. Should you start the challenge outside of normal working hours, you need only leave your details at Pen-y-ghent Cafe using the antique clocking machine.

Upon arrival, please use the car park in Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

After the first stage of the challenge is completed we’ll stop for a well-earned rest at the Ribble Head Viaduct, before we embark on the final legs of the challenge, Whemside and Ingleborough, completing the challenge with 12 hours. Good physical fitness is paramount, as is using the correct mountain apparel and accessories. We will provide you with a list of everything that you need.

5.30am-Meeting at CAFT (WA14 3RE) for those using our transport – Depart by 5.45

7.30am- Everyone to meet at the main Car-park in Horton in Ribblesdale

Nearest Postcode- BD24 0HF – for those making their own way

7.45am-Start challenge

Early afternoon- light lunch at Ribble Head Viaduct

Approx. 6.45pm-challenge complete

A well-deserved drink for those who wish!

Please ensure you bring snacks, water and lunch as well as the items on the kit list.

***Please bring appropriate clothing and walking footwear***

The temperature, even on a sunny, glorious day can reduce dramatically as we climb. Typically, for every 100 metres we climb, the temperature reduces by 1 degree!

General Items:

Boot / walking footwear, with ankle support

Quick drying walking trousers-- advisable- (not jeans!!)

Light weight top

Jumper / warm clothing / base layer

Waterproof jacket

Fleece or something similar

So also bring:

Waterproof trousers

Hat & Gloves

Dry clothes for afterwards

Sun hat

Sun cream

Camera

Bottled water

Snacks- (nuts, bananas etc)

Lunch

A small rucksack for taking your belongings

Money (there is a pub or two along the route)
