Biography

Expertise Summary

A passionate linguist, I chose to study abroad in the UK where I graduated in French and Italian. During my BA I lived for one year in Italy where I worked and studied, I taught French and wrote articles for the Italian magazine Avvenimenti. I then completed a Masters degree in Romance Languages and Literature at Birkbeck College and wrote my dissertation on Louis Althusser’s autobiography L’avenir dure longtemps.

My career as a language teacher started in 1991when I joined the UCL Language Centre as it first opened and where I taught French to undergraduate and post graduate students, members of the public and private clients for 16 years. I acted as the first French team coordinator and took part in a number of e-learning projects.

I continued to study French literature, developing my research interest in the body in contemporary French women writing, with a strong focus on “auto-fiction” and presented my work at a number of international conferences and contributed a chapter on Christine Angot for a book on French women writing in the 1990’s.

Since 2005, I have also worked as a free-lance legal interpreter for a large number of NGOs including Islamic Relief, Reunite UK and organisations supporting the rights of Asylum Seekers in Europe. I have also worked as an interpreter in market research focus groups for a number of clients including Back Row Productions, L’Oreal, Kerastase and Evian. My work as an interpreter helps me understand the key requirements of languages in business and society today.

In 2007 I joined London Metropolitan University as a Senior Lecturer in French and then as Principal Lecturer in 2008, I became the Director of the Open Language Programme. During my time at London Metropolitan University I continued to develop my interest in e-learning, presented my work at numerous conferences and as a University Blended Learning Champion, I took part in the University’s Migration Training Project towards the implementation of a new Learning Management System. I joined the University of Nottingham in Ningbo in March 2013.

My current research interests are theoretical and pedagogical and they are concerned with the use of digital tools to enhance the processes of second language acquisition. I am particularly interested in the use of voice tools (VOIP) and their potential to reshape current practices in language teaching.

I am also very interested in the development of language curricula for special purposes and the development of corporate training in languages management strategies to support successful work across cultures.
