MINUTES OF THE 20TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

INTRODUCTION

1Mrs Lysia Kee, Master of Ceremony for the 20th Annual General Meeting, called the meeting to order at 1615 hours. As there was no quorum, the meeting was adjourned for half an hour. The AGM resumed at 1645 hours and 35 voting members were present. Mrs Kee informed the meeting that though 2009 was not a voting year, members would be voting for the two auditors.

2Mrs Lysia Kee invited the President of the 10th Executive Council, Mr Jimmy Tan, to confirm the minutes of the last AGM and to present the Annual Report.

CONFIRMATION OF THE MINUTES OF THE 19TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

3Members were invited to propose that the minutes of the 19th Annual General Meeting be confirmed. The motion was proposed by Dr Koh Thiam Seng and seconded by Mrs Sita Singh. The minutes were unanimously adopted.

CONFIRMATION OF THE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE 10TH EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

4Members were invited to propose that the Annual Report of the 10th Executive Council be accepted. The motion was proposed by Dr Ang Wai Hoong and seconded by Mrs Kamala Thiagarajah. The report was unanimously accepted.

PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS

5Mr Jimmy Tan welcomed members to the Annual General Meeting and thanked them for their support in the activities of ASCD Singapore. He remarked that the 10th ASCD Executive Council would continue its term till 30th June 2010 when the next President, Dr Koh Thiam Seng, would take over from him.

6Mr Jimmy Tan emphasized the fact that ASCD is a non-profit organization run by volunteers who are committed to promoting professionalism and improving educational practice in Singapore. He reiterated ASCD’s mission of providing leadership in instruction and curriculum development to nurture successful learners. He reported that to meet this goal, ASCD Singapore had, in 2008, planned and carried out a rich and diverse programme for its members.

7Mr Jimmy Tan then went on to report some of the major activities that were carried out during the period.

7.1Understanding by Design (UbD) customized school-based workshops anchored by Dr Susan Clayton from Canada, were conducted throughout the year for teachers. UbD school-based workshops were also organized for teachers from schools and other institutions as well as MOE departments namely the Humanities and the Aesthetics Branch and the Gifted Education Branch.

7.2Besides the UbD workshops, there were other workshops such as Restorative Justice Practices by trainers from New Zealand and Tackling Assessment by Dr Gary Simpson from Australia.

8Mr Tan also reported on ASCD(S)’s commitment to support schools that wish to engage speakers from ASCD’s pool of trainers and consultants for their staff seminars and cluster professional development workshops.

9In reporting the visit by ASCD International Board Visit, Mr Tan said that twenty-five board members arrived in Singapore from 3rd to 9th August 2008. They had a busy week visiting MOE, NIE, a selection of schools and other educational institutions arranged by ASCD (S) and having meetings and holding dialogues with Singapore educators. Accompanied by their spouses, the board members also visited the Night Safari, the Singapore Flyer and had the privilege of joining the National Day celebrations 2008 at the MarinaBay.

10Mr Jimmy Tan informed members that ASCD (S) would continue to support the NIE in presenting the ASCD Book Prizes to participants of the Diploma in Department Management Courses. For the Post-Graduate Master of Education (Curriculum and Teaching Specialisation) the ASCD Gold Medal is awarded to the Best Overall Achievement and Book Prize for the Best Critical Inquiry Project. These prizes, Mr Tan said, demonstrated ASCD’s support in promoting teacher leadership in schools.

11In conclusion, Mr Jimmy Tan expressed his sincere thanks to the 10th Executive Council for their time, commitment and hard work in organizing all the activities and events.

TREASURER’S REPORT

12The Treasurer, Ms Quek Seok Noi, presented the Balance Sheet and the Income and Expenditure Account for the year ending 31 December 2008. She reported that the Association showed a profit of $151,031.91 for 2008. The Association’s current balance stood at $536,462.87.

13Ms Quek Seok Noi thanked the auditors for 2008, Mr Thomas Boh and Ms Connie Seng, for their services.

CONFIRMATION OF THE STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTS FROM 2008

14Members were invited to propose that the statement of accounts for 2008 be confirmed. The motion was proposed by Mrs Soo Kim Bee and seconded by Mrs Alice Poh. The meeting unanimously passed the statement of accounts.

ELECTION OF TWO HONORARY AUDITORS FOR 2009

15Mr Shaw Swee Tuck, the Returning Officer, invited nominations for honorary auditors. There were two nominations.

16As there were no other nominations, members were asked to propose that nominations be closed. Mrs Chin Shin Yea proposed the motion and Dr Cheah Yin Mee seconded it. Mr Shaw officially announced Mr Ee Chye Heng and Mr John Lim as Honorary Auditors for 2009.

ANY OTHER MATTERS

17Dr Pat Wolfe and Dr Susan Clayton, the speakers for the Symposium which was held earlier in the day, were invited to pick the prize-winners for theASCD (Singapore) Lucky Draw.The following were the prize winners:

CONCLUSION

18The 20th Annual General Meeting ended at 1715 hours. Mrs Lysia Kee thanked all members present for their presence and support.
