“teaching from the teacher”

John 7:14–36

This morning, we examine the thoughts and teaching of Jesus while at the Feast of Tabernacles. First, Jesus has a discussion with the religious leaders over doctrine. Secondly, Jesus provides instructions to the murmuring people of Jerusalem about the Law of Moses. Thirdly, Jesus enters into a dialogue with the temple guards that they will look for Him and not find Him. ______

The Relevant Question“What did the teacher teach?”

1 – his ______was from god [v16]

  • Halfway through the Feast, Jesus goes to the temple and begins teaching. As the religious leaders listened to Jesus, they were astonished, amazed, and marveled that Jesus knew the sacred writings, or letters, having never been formally taught. ______

  • In Mark 1:22, we are told that the Jews were astonished at Jesus’ doctrine > “…For he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.” ______

  • When a person does the Will of God, that person will know the doctrine of Christ. ______

  • Someone once said, “Human knowledge must be known to be loved, but divine knowledge must be loved to be understood.” ______

2 – his ______on the sabbath was lawful [v23]

  • Jesus healed the impotent man on the Sabbath day, and since then the Jews have been plotting to kill Jesus. ______

  • Jesus reminded themurmuring people that He had performed one work [miracle] on the Sabbath, and they all marveled. Moses gave you circumcision [although it originated with Abraham] and you circumcised on the eighth day even if it fell on the Sabbath. In other words, if the care for one part of the body was permitted on the Sabbath, then certainly the healing of the whole body should be allowed on the Sabbath ______

  • Jesuswork on the Sabbath was legal, lawful, and rightful. The Law is a mirror to let us see that we are lost sinners, and to show us that we need a Savior. ______

3 – his ______was not yet come [v30]

  • Jesus’ rebuke of the Jews so angered them that they said we know where Jesus is from, but no one will know where Christ is from. ______

  • Jesus came into the world to give His life a ransom for the many; to die upon the Cross of Calvary.
