Write-a-Reader Competition

REFUGEE WEEK 2008

The competition provides NER teachers with an opportunity to participate in and develop the theme of ‘A Place to Call Home’- with their primary and high school students as part of celebrating Refugee Week 2008 – 15-22 June

To support this competition an example Reader will be posted to your school called ‘Alawen’s Story’ which was written by Alawen a refugee from Sudan & a student at ArmidaleCityPublic School with support from Helen.

Refugee Week – Reader Competition
Individuals or groups of students are invited to develop a Reader on the theme ‘A Place to Call Home’ the 2008 theme for Refugee Week. The book should be produced on A4 size paper, from 8 to 16 pages long. The text should be type written and illustrated.
About theRefugee Week Theme – ‘A Place to Call Home’:
Australia’s Refugee Week theme of ‘A Place to Call Home’ encourages people to think about the global themes of protection and human rights by focusing on the fundamental right to a secure place to call home. It encourages Australians to think about our common obligations to people who have no secure home, as well as as to acknowledge the 700,000 refugees and humanitarian migrants over the past 60 years who have made Australia their home.
Entry Categories
Junior: Years K-4,
Middle: Years 5-8,
Senior: Years 9-12.
All entries must be accompanied by a completed Student Entry Form secured to the back of each entry. Entries are to be addressed to:

Prizes Sponsored by the Armidale Harmony Day Group / A representativepanel will judge the entries.
Decisions made by the judging panel are final. Prizes will be made to students whose works best illustrate an innovative approach to the theme ‘A Place to Call Home’
  • Each entrant will receive a certificate of acknowledgement
  • Winning Junior, Middle and Senior regional entries in both genres will each receive a prize of $100 book voucher
  • Winners will be publicly announced
  • Winning entries may be published, exhibited publicly, used for promotional purposes or uploaded onto World Wide Web.
