Symantec AntiVirus (SAV)

Uninstallation of Existing AntiVirus Software:

·  Norton/Symantec AntiVirus:

Use the Add/Remove Programs tool in your Control Panel, and Remove all programs that have to do with: Symantec, LiveUpdate, and Norton.

·  McAfee SecurityCenter:

Use the built-in uninstaller, but be sure to uninstall VirusScan Online, Personal Firewall, Privacy Service, and SpamKiller before uninstalling SecurityCenter.

Installation of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition:

  1. Go to the Essential Stanford Softward download page (http://www.stanford.edu/dept/itss/ess/). Choose the appropriate operating system, and find Symantec AntiVirus among the provided programs.
  2. Download and run the SAV Install program.
  3. Follow the Installation Wizard instructions.
  4. If you have any problems, look at the provided installation documentation on the SAV download page.

Updating Your Virus Definitions:

  1. Once you’ve installed SAV, you should see a shield icon on your toolbar. Double-click this icon to launch SAV.
  1. Click the “LiveUpdate…” button (screenshot on next page), and step through the update screens. This will connect you to the online Symantec site that keeps track of all released viruses, and download definitions for these viruses onto your computer. When scanning, SAV will look through your computer to find any files that match these definitions, and try to delete any matches. Also, when File System Realtime Protection is enabled (right-click on the SAV shield icon), any file that you try to open will be scanned for these viruses before being actually opening.

Scanning Your Computer:

  1. After launching SAV, click the “Scan Computer” option in the left sidebar.

  1. Select your hard drive(s), and click “Scan” to finish.

Scheduling a Scan:

  1. After launching SAV, click the “Scheduled Scans” folder in the left sidebar.

  1. Click the “New Scheduled Scan” option.

  1. Enter an appropriate title and description for scan, then click “Next”.

  1. Pick the time that you’d like to have your computer scanned. This should be a time when your computer will be on, but you won’t be doing anything with it. Click “Next” when done.
  1. Select your hard drive(s), and click “Save” to finish. Your computer will now be scanned every day at whatever time you selected.
