SUN LAKES HIKING CLUB RULES and POLICIES

Release From Liability Since hiking can be dangerous, each hiker must assume responsibility by signing one Release from Liability prior to their first hike and a Release and Assumption of Risk prior to each hike.

Car Pooling All members are encouraged to take turns driving, but if this is not possible rides will always be available. Most trailheads are accessible by passenger cars. The hike write-up will state if the road is only accessible with high clearance and/or 4-wheel drive vehicles.

Driver Compensation The payment due each driver will be stated in the write-up prior to the hike based on 12.5 cents per mile one way rounded to the nearest dollar plus $2 if travel on a dirt road over one mile is required.

Hike Leaders Hike leaders provide the hike rating and written trailhead directions, bring the charged radios, cell phone and medical kit, and make sure that each hiker signs in and completes a Release from Liability. Leaders also set the hike’s pace, balancing between the slowest and fastest hikers, appoint a rear sweep, provide rest stops and take head counts during the hike.

Leader Authority The hike leader is in charge and has authority to question and, if necessary, deny a hiker participation if he/she is unknown to any Club member present on the hike and has not made prior contact with the leader, does not have essential gear, lacks sufficient experience or is not properly outfitted.

Exiting the Trailhead The last two cars leaving the trailhead must exit together.

New Member Requirements Prospective members must complete a Membership Application, complete two hikes under leaders who confirm their successful completion of the hikes on their Membership Application, and pay a one-time initiation fee and the yearly dues.

Hiker Preparedness Hikers must be self-sufficient on a hike, have suitable footwear and carry adequate water. Each hiker should also carry food, sunscreen, rain gear, and appropriate emergency items. Do not attempt a hike that you suspect is beyond your endurance or physical capability. For further information see the “Ten Essentials” at

Trail Procedure Do not get ahead of the leader or behind the rear sweep without permission, and always keep the hiker in front of you in view. If you are unable to continue a hike for any reason, immediately discuss the matter with the leader or sweep. Guns, radios and pets are prohibited.

Wilderness Respect All items carried into a wilderness area must be packed out. If you encounter a snake or other wildlife, give it wide latitude and do not taunt it. Do not contaminate any stream or water source. Remove debris found on the trail, and always stay on the trail.

Dues Dues are $10 annually payable January 1 to the Treasurer and delinquent on February 28. Hikers 80 years and older are considered paid honorary members who are not required to pay dues.
