Description of Organization and Mission: Living History founded
in 2002, introduces low-income urban high school students to
careers and post-secondary study in the fields of history and
historic preservation. Students gain skills and knowledge through
hands-on courses in archaeology, fashion, musicology,
architecture, food security/sustainability, drama, military
studies, interpretive skills, and media production. They make
connections with history professionals through internships.
Living History students proudly take the field as the 14th Rhode
Island Heavy Artillery, the state’s Black Civil War regiment.

--Section 2: Project Description--
Title of the Project: Iron Man Phase 2
Project Location (Address, City, State, and Zip): 50 Taft Street,
Coventry, RI 02816
General Project Description (you may attach a longer narrative if
necessary): Iron Man is an archaeological field school for
students attending the Met High School in Providence/Newport.
Under the direction of a professional industrial archaeologist
the Met students are uncovering the structures of a major 18th
century iron forging complex along the Pawtuxet River belonging
to the Major General Nathaneal Greene. The students are learning
archaeological techniques and technologies and self recording
their discoveries. They are learning about the history of the
prominent Greene family and the complex iron making business of
the colonial and revolutionary period.
Potential Scope of Work/Tasks for RWU CPC:
Living History is seeking two RWU CPC students to assist with
Iron Man. Tasks will include supervising and working with Met
students in mapping and measuring sub-sites on the property,
clearing sub-sites of surface coverings of leaves, brush, and
timber, coaching students with writing blogs, research reports,
photo captions, video narrations, and in-school presentations.
RWU/CPC students will also assist with Archaeology Day at the
Nathaneal Greene Homestead. This is a living history type event
with re-enactors, blacksmith, and demonstrations of
archaeological field work.
What will be the final product output for this project? (survey,
website, design plans, drawings, etc.): Iron Man has a website.
Phase II work will be entered on this web site. The project
archaeologist will file a report with the RI State Historic
Preservation Commission
Proposed Project Schedule (when the tasks/project needs to be
completed): Iron Man Phase II will begin with a recruitment event
at the Met School on September 22nd. Phase II field work will
continue till December 15.

Please describe how this project will benefit your organization
and the advancement of your mission: Iron Man is a real-world
learning project in history and preservation. It is exactly what
Living History is all about.
Please describe how this project might benefit the overall
community, including specific groups that could benefit from this
project (i.e. target populations, neighborhoods, specific
town/city/region).: The project has state-wide and national
significance. Nathaneal Greene was second only to Washington as a
commander in the Revolution. The source of the Greene family's
economic and political power rested on their ownership and
mastery of the iron making business at Coventry.
Please explain why you have chosen to seek assistance from the
RWU CPC with your project request, instead of undertaking the
project using fee-for-services from a paid professional: Living
History has very limited funding to carry out Iron Man Phase II.
We also wish to have Met students meet, work, and learn from
RWU/CPC students.

RWU/CPC students will benefit from Iron Man Phase II by gaining:
