OUTGOING STUDENT FEEDBACK FORM

University AttendedSternBusinessSchool, NYU

INDUCTION/ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

There are about one or two meetings with all IBEX (International Business Exchange Program) incoming students at the beginning of each semester. Then there are about two more events planned throughout the semester (trip to the UN Headquarters, MetropolitanMuseum, Thanksgiving Lunch, Farewell Lunch, etc.).

ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

Professors (lecturers) are very approachable. Even if they have stricter office hours or scheduling conflicts, most will accommodate to see or speak either in their office, at a coffee shop, or at other convenient places. I even had professors call students, or in my case, speak on Skype.

Most professors will make the effort to get to know the students (name and brief background), given the smaller class size (under 30). They will sometimes have tent cards for you. Because of the smaller class size, you are required to participate – you are graded. They will occasionally cold-call students, but this is really just to get some ideas flowing.

Typically, the class grade is as follows: 15% participation, 20% mid-terms, 15% homeworks and other projects, 20% presentation, final exam 30%.

MBS INTERNATIONAL OFFICE

The Office was helpful.

MBS SECOND YEAR MEETINGS

Generally fine.

HOST INTERNATIONAL OFFICE

Carmen Johnson and Lisa Butcher have been very supportive and welcoming. They respond to emails promptly and always appreciate students dropping in their office to update them. Whenever I had problems, they typically were proactively following-up with my issue.

INSURANCE, HEALTH COVER

I had to purchase NYU’s health insurance as they were quite strict about the origins and coverage of the insurer. Please check NYU for any updates..

INFORMATION ON ANY ADDITIONAL COSTS

Nothing regarding the university. Books vary in price and quantity per course.

ACCOMMODATION

During my exchange, I stayed at Palladium Hall – a university dormitory. It is very conveniently located, at one of the major subway intersections in the city – Union Square. It is also about 10 minutes walk from Stern building. Adjacent to Palladium, there is one of the cheaper mostly organic food grocery stores – Trader Joe’s.

I stayed in a single room as I expected many visitors. The room is en-suite and has a kitchenette. Palladium has one of the university gyms and a swimming pool in the basement, a dining hall, laundry room, TV room, recreation room, study rooms, and the career’s service. It also has many activities that are co-sponsored (e.g. trips to the Opera, Broadway shows, museum tours, large retail outlets, etc.). Also, the Resource Centre (i.e. the reception desk) provided a bunch of amenities.

DESTINATION INFORMATION AND OVERALL EXPERIENCE

One needs to be proactive at making friends while at Stern. I would recommend taking classes outside of the Stern to better integrate yourself with local students as students are generally competitive. Meeting other Stern exchange students is a good opportunity to travel around the US (Niagara Falls, Las Vegas, Boston, WashingtonDC, Chicago, etc.).

New York transportation is convenient – the subway system is 24 hours and is $2.25 per ride.

There are a myriads of restaurants. You name it, they have it. Ethiopian anyone?
