Our next meeting will be our summer picnic which will be held at Bill and Joanna’s home on Sylvia Lake Sunday June 13th starting at noon. Please bring a dish to pass and your own dinner settings. Hot dogs and hamburgers and rolls will be provided by the club. Also bring any mineral specimens or items you wish to donate to the “cup drawings” at the end of the day. We are still doing the bottle and can drive if you wish to bring bags to donate to that fund raiser. A club member who has wished to remain anonymous will match what we collect. The show flyers are ready and will be passed out that day and we’ll have signup sheets for those who wish to be show helpers. A free T-shirt will be given to any member who wishes to sign up for a 4-hr time slot working at the show.

2010 St. Lawrence Co. Mineral Club Field Trips
Powers and Bush… during our annual show in Madrid, NY August 21st and 22nd departing at 9:00 from the Community Center.
Minutes from the Last Meeting
There were 17 people in attendance at the May 6th meeting. Bill opened the meeting after another excellent pot luck dinner. The treasurer’s report was given by Chris Sutherland. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Bill asked attendees if they’d brought their assignments”. He had assigned the task of bringing a design for our signs for the show. There were a few that were brought in. We agreed that bright yellow would be the best for the background, and the wording to include “Rock & Gem Show” and “Madrid” and”August -- & --“in black lettering. Bill also had asked for maps to be brought in so we could try to set a count for the signs needed. There was one map brought in and we decided that we would need at least 50 signs to strategically locate in surrounding locales. We also decided to put the signs out at least three weeks before the show for more exposure. Glen Simonelli gave his report on the costs of the signs. They are all different at each company and priced by size. We agreed that the size we should probably get is 24 X 18, double sided, and identical for the lowest price. 50 of them
would cost $150.00 and the shipping maybe $25.00. A budget of $400.00 should be allotted.
Scott Sutherland made the motion and Bob Taillon 2nd the motion.
Bill and Glenn will get together to finalize the details.
Bill’s design was picked as the one we wanted with larger lettering for the Gem & Rock show. Bill announced that we made $14.28 in the bottle drive collection. Some talk was devoted to the show badges and whether or not to make them different for club volunteers. Joanna suggested that if a member worked at least four hours during the show that they are given a free T-shirt to wear during the show and during pre show set-up.
Bill said that he and Joanna went to Potsdam State to see the Mineral Fair there and related to members that it was excellent for children and adults alike. He especially liked the idea of mineral “kits” for kids consisting of egg cartons and free samples of minerals for the children. We could incorporate mineral kit building into our show and provide educational labels for the mineral and rock samples that kids place in their egg carton kits. Some of the club members including Jerry Curcio said they would love to help out by donating samples. We were all given the assignment to save egg cartons. Potsdam geology department also had a mineral identification booth set up which was busy all day long. This also is great idea for our show.
Bill asked if anyone was
going to the Franklin NJ show if they could try to get samples of fluorescents. Jerry Curcio noted
that they charge $1.5 per lb. to all. Chris Sutherland asked about
renting a bus to take members to the Syracuse show. She will check into this (because we unanimously assigned this task to her!) We need to discuss food vendors for the show. Bill will call the town clerk in Madrid for information. Glenn Simonelli asked about the status of our tax exemption. Chris said not next yet. Next field trip May 15th to Bush Farm, meet at the Silver Leaf restaurant at 8:00. Meeting adjourned.
