For your first outside reading project, you must choose ONE of the options below to complete on the SSR book you chose this semester. This is your chance to be creative and really express your thoughts and feelings towards your book and its characters. Please do not wait until the last minute to start your project!
Character Journal
You will adopt the persona of one character from your book and record several entries as if this character were writing down his or her thoughts in a journal. You must include at least 15 significant incidences from your story. These incidences should be spread out throughout the text and should be a minimum of a half page each. Please include a date (if possible) and a quote from your book that pertains to the incident you are writing about.
Monologue
Write a monologue (or dialogue) about your book. Your memorized scene must be at least 2-3 minutes in length. You must bring at least one prop that will be used in your scene—costumes are acceptable—and turn in a typed script on the due date.
Timeline
Create a timeline of the events from your book by completing a power point presentation. Your Power Point presentation should consist of at least 15 display pages with no larger than 16pt font. You will also need to turn in a printed copy of your presentation.
Interview
Pretend you are a journalist responsible for interviewing a character from your book. Create a ‘mock Q &A interview’ with a character from your book, making sure to include your characters’ personality in each answer. This interview must be turned in typed, 12 pt. font, with a minimum of 4 pages. You must show through your interview questions that you completed your SSR selection and comprehend the major events.
Children’s Version
Create a children’s version of your novel. This book must be written at a 4th grade level with a minimum of 15 pages of text and 5 pages of full color art. Be sure to include a front and back cover. The back cover should include a brief summary of the book.
Music Selection
Write an original music selection that echoes the era of your novel. You must include a copy of your song lyrics and a complete 2 page discussion of your musical selection that explains the lyrics and the inspiration behind your piece.
Original Work of Art
Create a painting, sculpture, or any other form of creative art depicting a character or scene from your book. You must include a two-page typed summary of your book and an explanation of your original work of art. This paper should be in MLA format, double-spaced, 12 pt. font.
Facebook Page
Create a Facebook page for one of the major characters in your book. This page must be done on the computer and must be completely filled out. I will provide a link to the template for those interested in completing this assignment for their projects. You must include the characters Friends, Information including, birthday, relationship status, and current city, an Updated Status, Albums, and several conversations with other characters from your book. You must adopt the voice and personality of each character when creating the conversations between them.
Movie Poster
Create a “movie release”-type poster for the book. It must be on full size poster board and include:
- Picture – showing some exciting scene from the book
- Your name and class period (Produced by…)
- Title
- Author (Directed by:…)
- Genre (Rated: Juvenile fiction, adventure, mystery, horror, romance, etc. )
- Recommended Audience, (Recommended for: teens, adults, animal lovers, sports fans, etc.)
- Starring (list 4-5 main characters)
- Run Time (page count)
The illustration MUST be colored – no pencil drawings and must cover the poster. You need to include a 2 page write up of your book that includes a summary, a description of what you liked about the book, and a critique.
