A VOICE FOR VOTING
Kyffin Elementary School sixthgraders learned about democracy in a non-partisan, old-fashioned way - they hit the streets.Kyffin sixth-grade social studies teacher Collette Collinsworked with her students to create posters and studied core democracy values. “We did a research question for homework to figure out how many people out of the registered voters actually vote,” said sixth-grader Abby Watkins. “In Jefferson County it was only 62 percent, so we are trying to get more registered voters to vote." Collins added that her students aren't old enough to vote themselves, but they still have a voice. "It's important to vote because you can make a difference in what you want and it will help your community and you can make your community your way," said Abby. Kullerstrand Elementary School students and stafforganized to support students a world away. Every year, Principal Esther Valdez visits schools and families in Belize. This year, she brought 100 pounds of school supplies raised by Kullerstrand students to Belize in the villages of SanIgnacio, Benque and Buena Vista. "Literacy development is the responsibility of all of us," said Valdez. "As global citizens, Kullerstrand students have developed partnerships with several schools in Belize through solidarity, not charity.”
