Session 6 - Sub-Group 1: Designing WASH Facilities Considering MHM

Session 6 - Sub-Group 1: Designing WASH Facilities Considering MHM

Session 6 - Sub-group 1: Designing WASH facilities considering MHM

Task 1 – Design features of WASH facilities

  • Put your feet into the shoes of a woman or an adolescent girl
  • If you could design sanitation and hygiene facilities that meet your needs when menstruating – what key design features would you include?

Task 2 - Comparing WASH facility options

  • Compare latrine and bathing facilities A, B, C, D (shown in cards 1 to 6) and read the descriptions and identify which ones you would prefer to use yourself as a woman or girl in a camp situation and why?
  • Consider the shower unit in laminated card 9 – what are the strong design features and the possible problematic design features?

Session 6 - Sub-group 2: Assessments of need, monitoring and feedback

Task 1 – Assessment of needs relating to menstruation

  • Discuss and identify appropriate questions which could be used to assess the WASH related needs of women and girls to manage their menstrual hygiene during an emergency?
  • Identify the methods that could be used to collect the information and at which stages of an emergency response?

Task 2 –Monitoring and feedback

  • Determine key indicators which could be included in monitoring routines which would provide some information on the appropriateness of WASH facilities for women and girls?
  • Which methods would be the most effective in obtaining feedback from women and girls on whether they are able to effectively manage their menstruation safely, with privacy and dignity?

Session 6 - Sub-group 3: NFIs and disposal of used sanitary materials

Task 1 - NFIs

  • Assume that you will be provided with either cloth or a re-usable sanitary pad set (and so do not discuss this element of an NFI kit)
  • Discuss and propose from the perspective of a woman or adolescent girl what NFIs would be most useful for managing your menstrual period?

Task 2 – Disposal of used sanitary materials

  • Assume that women and girls prefer and are being provided with disposable sanitary pads
  • Use the laminated card 8 – to look at options for waste collection containers to be included in the latrine units. Discuss what are features make them most suitable for this task?
  • Use the laminated card 7 – to discuss the end options for disposal. Which disposal options would be the most appropriate to establish and manage and in which circumstances?
  • If time identify any possible problems with the management of collection and disposal systems for menstrual wastes
