This master should be used by designers working on Port of Portland construction projects and by designers working for PDX tenants (“Tenants”). Usage notes highlight a few specific editing choices, however the entire section should be evaluated and edited to fit specific project needs.

SECTION 235100 - BREECHINGS, CHIMNEYS, AND STACKS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1DESCRIPTION

  1. This section describes prefabricated boiler breeching and stack, gas flue, and sidewall vent termination hood.

1.2RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE

  1. Division 7, Thermal and Moisture Protection

1.3REFERENCES

  1. NFPA: National Fire Protection Association
  2. NFPA 211: Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances
  3. OMSC: Oregon Mechanical Specialty Code

1.4SUBMITTALS

  1. For each item specified herein, submit product/material data; shop drawings; operation and maintenance data; as-constructed data; installation, startup, and testing manuals; operation and maintenance manuals; and as-constructed drawings.
  2. Shop Drawings: Include details of construction, roof penetrations, mounting, and supports.
  3. Product Data: Include performance data.
  4. Include sizing analysis of each system where specified.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1PRESSURE BOILER BREECHING AND STACK

  1. Acceptable Manufacturers: Metalbestos Type PS or IPS, Stacks, Ampco, Van Packer, or equal.
  2. Provide factory built modular connector, double wall, manifold and stack system, complete with tall cone flashing, ventilated thimble, storm collar, rain cap, and complete mounting hardware including mounting bracket, guy wires, and anchor plates.
  3. System shall be UL approved for use with building heating equipment which produce exhausted flue gases at temperatures not exceeding 1000ºF under continuous operating conditions and not exceeding 1400ºF under intermittent operating conditions when burning gaseous or liquid fuels as described in NFPA 211. The stack system designed and installed shall be gas tight to prevent leakage of combustion products. Design system to compensate for all flue gas induced thermal expansions.
  4. Construct stack system with inner gas carrying pipe of Type 304 stainless steel suitable for burning natural gas and outer jacket of aluminum coated steel, with a nominal 1inch airspace between the walls.
  5. Inner pipe joints shall be sealed by use of factory supplied V-bands and sealant as specified in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  6. Roof penetrations shall be suitable for type of roof system used and shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s detail drawings and installation instructions. Extend stack above roof as required by local codes.

2.2GAS FLUE

  1. Provide single wall, minimum 10-gauge galvanized steel gas flue pipe and connectors, complete with all required mounting hardware.
  2. Joints shall be sealed as specified in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. System shall conform to all requirements of OMSC, for building heating and industrial-type low-heat appliances.

2.3SIDEWALL VENT TERMINATION HOOD

  1. Provide approved sidewall vent termination hood. Heavy duty, corrosion resistant aluminum construction, 4-inch diameter inlet, integral heat shield, mounting hardware. Tjernlund VH1, or equal.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1INSTALLATION

  1. Coordinate sealing of roof penetrations with work specified in Division 7.
  2. Maintain minimum clearances around stack as required by code and by manufacturer.
  3. Support stack horizontally and vertically and provide adjustable length fittings to compensate for thermal expansion. Generally support stack at bottom and at changes in direction. Intermediate supports to allow for movement.
  4. Outlet of stack shall be minimum 2 feet above all building elements within 10 feet. Stack shall be self-supported without need for guy wires.
  5. Install sidewall vent termination hoods in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

3.2APPLIED LOCATIONS

  1. Pressure Boiler Breeching and Stack: Install on venting system of boilers, gas water heaters, and gas-fired duct furnaces.
  2. Gas Flue: Install on venting system of gas-fired unit heaters and gas-fired radiant heaters.
