Course Description

Physics is the study of the interactions of matter and energy. Believe it or not, physics is the simplest and most basic science! This course is designed to help prepare students for a number of technical employment pathways. The topics covered will be used as examples of the prime movers. For instance we will begin with the concept of forces, and how forces relate to all of the other topics covered in the course. Then we will study motion, then acceleration, etc. This course contributes to the Salt Lake City School District’s Learner Outcomes by helping the student become a complex thinker, a problems solver, and a self-directed learner.

Course Goals and Objectives

The objective of this course is for students to develop an understanding of the basic concepts of physics. Upon successful completion students will be able to: recognize, use, and interpret formulas; compare and contrast ideas and processes; formulate hypotheses to explain phenomenon and design appropriate experimentation.

Course Materials

  • Textbook: can be found at No physical textbook will be used.
  • (1) 3 ring binder in order to keep handouts, homework, notes, and materials organized
  • blue or black pen AND pencil (erasable pens are great, but no colored pens)
  • highlighter

Format and Procedures

Students will receive credit for engaging in the following classroom and homework activities:

HONESTY POLICY:

A very strict honesty policy will be adhered to in this classroom. Students are expected to do their own work, except while working in cooperative groups, when sharing information and ideas is appropriate.

Students who “borrow” another person’s work, or “lend” their own work in a dishonest or otherwise inappropriate manner, will receive an F on the assignment/test in question and quite possibly a failing grade for the course as well.

Performance Requirements

  1. Students are expected to be ON TIME and IN CLASS DAILY, prepared to work with their notebook, pen or pencil, and their completed homework assignments.
  2. Students are expected to show respect, tolerance and consideration for all persons and property in the classroom. Inappropriate language, behavior or dress is unacceptable.
  3. All items on (or in) the teacher’s desk and cabinets are to be left strictly alone, as are bulletin boards, TV, VCR, computers, animals and any other equipment in the room.
  4. Students are expected to pass assignments, quizzes and tests with a minimum 50% accuracy (see grading below) to receive a passing grade for this course.
  5. Students are expected to complete assigned work daily and turn it in on time. UNEXCUSED LATE WORK WILL RECEIVE A 20% PENALTY. In other words, work lost or misplaced (left in lockers, at home, eaten by a dog, etc.) or not handed in for other unexcused reasons, will not receive full credit. You will also be expected to take notes or highlight and annotate notes passed out to you in class. All of these notes will be kept in your binder. Also in your binder, you should keep the class open disclosure, any handouts, returned homework, test reviews and project guidelines. Your binder will act as a second “text book”.
  6. All assignments to be handed in must be clearly written in dark blue or black ink or pencil.
  7. Peer editing and grading will be used in this class.
  8. School policy will be followed with regard to tardies and absences.
  9. Cell phones are not to be used in class unless explicitly allowed by Mr. Bergstrom for academic purposes (ie to use a timer on a lab or to input a test date or due date into the calendar). First Offense = verbal warning. Second Offense = Phone confiscated until the end of class. Third Offense = Phone confiscated until the end of school. Fourth Offense = Phone confiscated until a parent meeting takes place.

Grading Procedures

Your grade will be on tests, quizzes, projects, homework assignments, notes, participation points, and lab activities. The grading scale I will use is as follows:

90-100 A86-87.9 B+76-77.9 C+66-67.9 D+ below 50 F

88-89.9 A-80-85.9 B70-75.9 C55-65.9 D 78-79.9 B- 68-69.9 C- 50-54.9 D-

Borderlines grades (ex: 79.5% -79.9%) will be assigned using my judgment. Consistent hard work and good behavior will be rewarded!

  • STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE A 20% DEDUCTION OF THEIR SCORE FOR ANY LATE WORK DUE TO AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE. Work is considered late if it is turned in after we have graded it as a class.
  • Students who are absent on the day an assignment is due may hand it in on the day of their return to class, if the absence is excused. Students who are absent on the day an assignment is given, must make up the work missed within one week if the absence is excused. Excusal notes will only be accepted within one week of the student’s return to class. It is the student’s responsibility to show Mr. Bergstrom their excusal slip so he can notify the excusal on their late assignment and/or find out what assignments they missed either before school, duringlunch, or after school, not in-between classes.
  • Excused absences are due to: illness (with doctor/parent note), extracurricular activities, religious observance, and administration approved family activities.
  • Students who are habitually absent on exam/quiz days may not be allowed to make up the exam/quiz. These tests will consist of various questions types, including multiple choice, matching, short/long answer, and diagramming.
  • Students will receive 2 Late Work/Hall Passes per term. These passes can be used towards using the hall pass, turning in late work without penalty, or may be turned in at the end of the term for 10 points each of extra credit.
  • Extra credit is not offered in this course in place of completing the required assignments with full effort. However, late work/hall passes may be turned in at the end of the term for extra credit of 10 points each.
  • Progress reports may be sent home for parent/guardian signatures. This is to ensure that both student and parent are informed of class progress. However, parents are encouraged to access their student’s grades through Powershool.

Important Deadlines

  1. Notebook Checks - Notebooks may be checked up to 3 times in the term and grades are recorded at the end of each grading term.
  2. End of Term Cut-off Date-The last Wednesday of each grading term will be the last day to hand in any assignments including make-up work and extra credit.
  3. There is no set schedule for quizzes or tests.
