Scholarships/Financial Aid Information

Students and parents are encouraged to review all scholarship opportunities listed on the school’s website, inside of the Counseling Office, as well as read the senior newsletter to keep up to date on the scholarship and financial aid opportunities available.

The U.S. Department of Education, Federal Student Aid provides over $80 billion annually in financial assistance for college. To receive federal student aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible after January 1. There are three ways a student can complete the FAFSA:

1.  Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov

2.  Download and complete a PDA version of the FAFSA at www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov

3.  Request a paper FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 800-4-FED-AID (800-433-3243).

Note: Double check ALL information in our school computer system---especially the social security number. Data MUST be correct for colleges and HOPE to get the proper information!!!

Hope Scholarship Changes
Recent news about changes to the state-funded HOPE Scholarship Program may have some families unsure of the best way to prepare for college. Too often, students hope they are ready for college and eligible for HOPE. Students need to get the facts about HOPE changes and know whether they are affected, but, more importantly, they need to make sure they’re making good academic choices now so that they can keep the scholarship once they get it.

GAcollege411.org is a comprehensive site that explains the college process from start to finish and is highly recommended. Below you will find links to federal financial aid information, government resources, large scholarship search engines, military programs, and how to plan for education costs at any age.

A Better Chance: Since its finding in 1963, the mission of this organization has rested in a single goal; to substantially increase the number of well-educated students of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American Society. A Better Chance works with students of color in sixth grade through college to help them gain access to broader educational and career opportunities. Application deadline is October 1. Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College is pleased to provide scholarships and enrichment opportunities to students in a pure science or mathematics degree program. Based on this grant, the School of Science and Mathematics created the Achievement through Student Support and Experiential Training in Science (ASSETS) scholar program. Eligibility requirements and application materials are available at www.abac.edu/sm/assets.

Academy of Beauty Science is a private school offering students opportunities in Cosmetology. Scholarships are available. For additional information call 678-289-5115.

AFROTC program trains and commissions officers into the US Air Force. Students in the AIRFORCE program attend a typical 4 year college. In addition to regular college classes, students attend one weekly lecture class each college semester as well as a Leadership Lab. To apply for scholarships, students simply visit www.AFROTC.com and click on the “apply now” link.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc – Psi Alpha Omega: Several academic scholarships will be awarded to graduating African American students in the Clayton and Henry County areas. Qualified applicants must have a 2.5 GPA and plan to attend a career and technical school, college, or university. Application deadline is March 1, 2013. Applications are available in the Counseling Office.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – Xi Beta Omega Scholarship was established for the purpose of providing financial assistance to students who plan on enrolling in an accredited institution of higher education for the purpose of obtaining a certificate, associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or more. The applicant must have a 3.0 GPA. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. The application deadline is March 1, 2012.

American Chemical Society Georgia 2012 Percy Julian High School Award will be given to a high school senior in recognition of scholastic achievement and leadership ability. The Percy Julian award is open to African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and members of other underrepresented groups. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5. Students must plan to major in a STEM discipline, plan to attend a college or university in the fall 2012, and show evidence of leadership skills which promote racial, ethnic, and cultural understanding. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. The application deadline is April 13, 2012.

Army Scholar Athlete: Scholar athletes are selected by their high school administrators. The Army Reserve sends and official selection form to the school counselor. The counselor is encouraged to consult with the principal and athletic director to select students who will receive this award. Official selection forms must be postmarked by May 30. Art Institute Guide to Scholarships: When you apply to The Art Institute of your choice, you should also take the time to apply for scholarships to help defray the costs of your education. 2011 Atlanta Braves High School Scholarship Program will award six $2000 scholarships to students who have demonstrated strong community service involvement as well as solid academic performance during high school. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. The application deadline is April 21, 2012.

Atlanta Jamaican Association invites college-bound high school students of Jamaican ancestry to apply for scholarships. To qualify for financial assistance, each candidate is required to submit an application as well as an essay on a selected topic relevant to Jamaica. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. Applications are due no later than May 15, 2013.

AXA Achievement Community Scholarship will award up to $670, 000 in scholarships this year to graduating high school seniors across the country. Previous scholarship winners are known as AXA Achievers who set and reach ambitious goals, demonstrate drive and determination, respect for self, family and community, and the ability to succeed in college. Barbizon Scholarship: Win a free College Scholarship valued up to $100,000. Students must be accepted to the college of their choice based upon individual academic skills and institutional requirements. Call 1-888-999-9404 for additional information.

Bates College awards $22 million of scholarship aid annually from institutional, federal, and state sources. Forty-two percent of enrolled students receive aid. For additional information visit www.bates.edu/sfs.xml.

BBB 2012 Student of Integrity Awards is available to any student who demonstrates leadership, community service, academic excellence, and excellent essay writing skills. Additional information about this scholarship opportunity is available in the Counseling Office. Deadline for submission is January 31, 2012.

BBG Communications Scholarship is open to students between the ages of 16 and 21. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must submit answers to two essay questions, which can be found on the application page prior to June 30, 2012. Bell Labs Fellowships for underrepresented minorities are available at http://www.belllabs.com/fellowships/CRFP/info.html

Best Buy @ 15 Scholarship Program is available to current high school seniors who plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study upon graduation. The application deadline is February 15, 2012. Please visit www.at15.com for more information.

Black College Expo Scholarship is open to high school seniors. Interested students must submit an essay of 500 words or less about “Why is a College Education Important to Me” with their contact and school information and expo market no later than the designated deadline.

Boston University Trustee Scholarship is a four-year, full tuition to Boston University. For more information visit www.bu.edu/admissions/trustee. Application deadline is December 1.

Brewton-Parker College offers various financial aid possibilities including HOPE, Federal Pell Grant, athletic scholarships, ministry scholarships, music scholarships, academic scholarships, and many others. Once you are admitted and have completed the FAFSA, they will award you a complete financial aid package. For more details you may visit their website at www.bpc.edu.

Buick Achievers Scholarship Program celebrates motivated and passionate college bound students. Students planning on enrolling for full-time study as first-time freshmen at a 4 year college or university, plan to major in engineering, technology, science, math, business administration, finance, marketing, or design, and interested in a career in the automotive or related industry is encouraged to apply. Information is available at www.buickachievers.com. The application deadline is February 28, 2013.

Burger King Scholars: This program awards $1000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning on furthering their education at a college or post secondary vocational/technical school. Eligibility: Must have a GPA 2.5 or higher; Must work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year; Demonstrate participation in community service and/or co-curricular activities; Demonstrate financial need; Receive recommendation; Plan to enroll in an accredited two or four year college, university, or vocational/technical school by Fall of application year. Call Me Mister: Several black colleges are looking for future black male teachers and will send them to universities/colleges for 4 years free. The “Call Me Mister” program is an effort to address the critical shortage of African American male teachers particularly among South Carolina’s lowest performing public schools. Program participants are selected from among under-served, socio-economically disadvantaged and educationally at-risk communities. The program is collaboration between Clemson University and four historically black colleges in South Carolina: Benedict College, Claflin University, Morris College, and South Carolina State University. Christian Connector provides a free Christian college information service as well as a $2500 Christian college scholarship drawing. Students can log onto www.christianconnector.com to request information and automatically be entered in the $2500 scholarship drawing.

Clayton State University Presidential Scholarship is open to eligible seniors. Presidential scholars receive an annual scholarship award in the excess of $12, 000 which includes tuition and fees grant, a housing and meal plan, and a bookstore award. Students are required to participate in the university’s Honors Program. Application deadline is February 16, 2011.

Columbus State University has a variety of scholarships with wide range of awards, requirements, and deadlines. Additional information is available at http://finaid.colstate.edu/scholarships.

Coca Cola Scholars Program: This scholarship will be awarded to current high school or home-school seniors anticipating graduation from a school or program in the United States during the academic year in which application is made; Must be a U.S. Citizen; U.S. National; U.S. Permanent Resident; Temporary Resident (legalization program); Refugee; Asylee; Cuban-Haitian Entrant; or Humanitarian Parolee planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution; Must have a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of your junior year of high school. High school seniors, who have not yet graduated, must submit initial applications between August and October 31 of his/her senior year in high school. College Prowler and Wachovia Scholarship: Have partnered to bring students an opportunity to win $1,000 scholarships monthly. Students will be awarded scholarships based on the best college application essay. CSU Servant Leadership Program provides students with learning experiences that create growing, self-aware, well-balanced, and insightful servant leaders, enriching the community and the world, while serving as model for others to follow. You can apply online by going to http://servant.colstate.edu/apply.php.

Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program recognizes high school seniors from Comcast communities for their commitment to service, academics, and demonstrated leadership. To acknowledge these accomplishments, recipients of the award will receive a one-time grant of $1000. One senior may be nominated from SHS to apply for this award. If interested, see Dr. Hodge in the Guidance and Counseling Office. Application deadline is November 30, 2012.

Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Inc: Each scholarship has its own specific purpose and eligibility criteria. Scholarships are managed with varying degrees of involvement by the Foundation's Education Advisory Committee and staff. Scholarships allow donors to invest in the future by helping deserving students pursue higher education. For more information and to download applications go to www.atlcf.org. Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Scholarship: This program was established in response to federal cuts in spending for education programs and scholarships. All applications are available at www.cbcfinc.org. Eligibility requirements: Must be a high senior who intend to pursue an undergraduate degree full-time or current full-time student in good academic standing at an accredited college or university; Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5; Exhibit leadership ability and participate in community service activities; Must reside in or attend a college/university in a congressional district represented by a CBC member. Application deadline is May 1 of each calendar year.

Connecticut School of Broadcasting: Every semester, CSB offers full-tuition scholarships to a few talented high school students. All you have to do to be considered is send an audio or visual demo tape. It could be a demonstration of your on-air potential, your editing and mixing skills, or an idea for a sports entertainment program. You’ll find full details, rules, and an entry form at GoCSB.com.

Danforth Scholars Program at Washington University is seeking nominations for the William H. and Elizabeth G. Danforth Scholars Program. They are seeking candidates who have exhibited a capacity for service and leadership, as well as academic excellence, and who will embrace the challenges of a rigorous academic curriculum. They are specifically interested in students who stand out amongst their peers for their maturity, strong moral character, selflessness, and commitment to community – qualities which embody the essence of the Danforths.
