Lesson/Unit Goal

/ The students will get exposure to wheels and they will ride on scooters throughout the gym. They will also have an opportunity to make their own choices and do physical activities on their own such as Basketball, soccer, striking objects, and tumbling.

Standards
(2,5) / As soon as the students walk in the gym, music will be playing and they will begin to walk. They will walk laps and walk on white. The students who are not ambulatory will be pushed in their chairs or helped with Hand over Hand assistance to walk.
Hello kids how are we doing today? Today our main focus is wheels. You will be getting on scooters and you will be pushed around the gym on wheels. For safety purposes we are only going to use 2 Scooters at a time. If I will whistle (beep) You will stop look and listen because I have something important to say.
So you all will be split into activity groups. The group with me will get on the scooters and the other groups will have an opportunity to participate in guided discovery. As you can see we have a soccer station, a basketball station, a striking station, and tumbling station. While you are in you activity groups you will have an opportunity to participate in all of those stations. The most important thing is for you guys to be engaged and active.
Activity Demonstration

Standards
(2,5) / As the students are seated in their designated spots I will quickly go through all of the stations and demonstrate what will be done. I will take my time demonstrating the Scooters because that is the main focus of the lesson. I will then explain the Guided Discovery stations (basketball, soccer, tumbling, and striking) to the assistants so they can work with the students through those stations. After I demonstrate how the Scooters will be utilized and scooter modifications for all of our students I will break the kids into their groups. Before they get started I will do check for understanding with all of the students (Verbal students: Ask questions and wait for response. Non-verbal students: Use Pic Symbols, let them pick by eye gaze or touch. Use the Yes or No touch tactile symbols to ask questions.)

(After 10 min. the groups switch).
Standards
(1,2,3,5,6) / The ambulatory students will sit on the scooter and push with their legs to move throughout the gym. They will also have the opportunity to lay on their stomach and use their arms to move as well. When not using their arms I will push them throughout the gym.
Modifications: Students who are non-ambulatory we will strap in the long scooter. We also have a seated scooter chair that we can belt the students into so they are safe. We will then push them around the gym so they get the feel of the movement on the scooters.
Activity Modification: If students are grasping the Scooter concepts we can modify into games, such as scooter races and obstacle courses. The students who excel on the sitting Scooters will have an opportunity to utilize the standing Scooters and the Big tricycle. Students who can not ride the bike independently will have an opportunity to ride the double seated bike.
Guided Discovery 20 min.
(1,2,3,5,6) / Guided discovery is an opportunity for students to make activity choices. There will be plenty of activities set up and the students will choose. The job of the Assistants with these students is to keep them engaged and to encourage them to participate in physical activity. The tumble Mats will be set up for the non ambulatory students to get on where they can (stretch, reach and grasp for objects, roll, and have visual stimulus.) The suspended objects will be up for the V.I. students to work on reaching and grasping. We also will have the object striking station and the basketball station that our V.I. students can utilize. The most important thing about Guided Discovery and our students is to make it as sensory as possible. During Guided Discovery students will have opportunities to do many activities while making choices.
I encourage the students to try all of the stations. It is important that we help engage our kids in everything, I will be there as a constant resource for activity ideas and modifications while the students are participating in Guided Discovery.
It is a collaborative effort between Teacher, Assistants, and students.
