The council member’s parents have been very supportive and active this year. Our end of the year visit to UWF of Pensacola is scheduled for May 3rd. We will have a tour of the campus, visit the Holodeck 3-D Interactive Learning Lab in the School of Science Department and then enjoy our lunch in the student café at the college. We are sure this visit will inspire our council members to really work towards academic excellence with a goal of college being the focus for success.

Intent to Return to Florosa 2013-14

By now you have received the Intent to Return card to complete regarding your intent for your child to return to Florosa Elementary School for the 2013-2014 school year. It is important that you complete this as accurately as possible. I will be receiving the 2013-2014 school budget information at the end of April. This information is helpful as I plan for instructional personnel, supplies, and materials for the 2013-2014 school year. I understand that your plans may change after you have submitted your intent, so please contact the school if your plans do change. Thank you for returning them to school in a timely manner.

DEA

Discovery Educational Assessment (DEA) will be administered to all students during the month of May. DEA is the progress monitoring assessment of reading, math, and science that is given to all Okaloosa County students three times per year. Your child’s teacher will let you know when your student will be testing. The results of the reading and math components will be used as one criterion for promotion in grades Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd. If you have question, contact your child’s teacher.

Field Days

Please join us for Field Days! Because we are still administering FCAT to 5th grade students on April 29th and 30th, it is critical that you adhere to the following instructions to ensure test security and an optimum testing environment for students who may be testing on that day. All visitors MUST check in at the Main Office and obtain a FIELD DAY VISITOR’s PASS. It is important that you wear your visitor’s pass at all times and that it is clearly visible. You will then be routed around the west side of the campus to the PE Field. When you leave campus you will follow that same route. If you are checking out your child, you must check them out in the Main Office. Only school staff should be in the classroom buildings until FCAT is completed. Thank you for your cooperation.

Principal’s News…

I’d like to give special recognition for the four teachers who participated in the Mathematics Formative Assessment System (MFAS) Project this year: Ms. Harr, Ms. Reinlie, Ms. Huggins, and Ms. Joseph.

Congratulations to Ms. Koch who will receive an Apple iPad from Donors Choose. This is a charitable organization that helps fund teacher’s projects. Check out other projects onthe Donors Choose website, donorschoose.org. Ms. Harr is currently looking for donors for her project.

When you receive this newsletter, FCAT 2013 will almost be complete. Thank you to all of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers and proctors for your assistance. This was the first year that 5th grade math was a computer based assessment. A special thanks to Mrs. Cahn and Mrs. Scott for making it a success.

Many of you may not be aware of the behind the scenes work of Mrs. Todd. Mrs. Todd has done a great job as our FCAT Test Coordinator! As the Site Coordinator, she is responsible for the preparation, organization, test administration security, and compliance of the FCAT. Thank you Mrs. Todd!

As the end of the school year draws near, each instructional minute is precious. Please continue to support your child’s academic progress by ensuring they arrive on time and are present unless they are sick or have a necessary appointment.

In closing, I would like to thank the teachers and support staff of Florosa Elementary School for their dedication to teaching children. Please join me in taking time to give them a special “Thank You” during the week of May 6th, Teacher Appreciation Week.
