Role Purpose
  1. Assist the Research and Development Director with the development and implementation a vibrant capability that informs teaching in accordance to Wintec priorities, builds thriving communities and supports economic growth.
  2. Manage the Research Coordinators and Administrators in the Wintec Research Office to ensure a high standard and efficient delivery of all services to meet the needs of research staff, and external stakeholders. Quality, excellence and ongoing growth in performance of our research outputs and outcomes are the goal.
  3. Oversee the internal and external research management processes of applied research focused on interfaces with external stakeholders
  4. Effectively liaise with the Research teams and other internal and external stakeholders to ensure the efficient and consistent delivery and quality of applied research
  5. Oversee all operational functions of the Wintec Research Office and research management at Wintec, including but not limited to PBRF management and administration
  6. Manage all processes relating to internal research project management, research ethics and the reporting and communication of research across Wintec
  7. Assist the Research and Development Director in building the Research Office at Wintec to become a centre of excellence in the Institute of Technology and Polytechnic (ITP) sector for managing and enabling the unique applied research and innovation focus, in line with global best practice for similarly applied research and innovation tertiary environments.

Location / The appointee will be based at Hamilton City campus / Rotokauri campus / Hamilton Gardens campus / Te Kuiti campus / Thames campus, but may be required to work at other sites.

Applied and Embedded Research / Oversee the internal research management processes and all research related services to customers
Assist with the promotion of applied and embedded research services offered by Wintec externally and maintain productive working relationships with industry/community groups through regular communications
Oversee the contracting of external experts, relevant Wintec staff and support the contracting process with industry partners to establish research projects/agreements
Manage the aspects of the research voucher scheme as delegated by the Research and Development Director
Evaluate and report on collated industry feedback during execution and after completion of industry projects and make recommendations where appropriate
Oversee the analysis of the research data for reporting and performance management purposes annually
Internal Research Management / Manage the distribution of all Wintec’s internal research funding allocation and expenditure
Ensure staff have access to assistance with the development and completion of internal and external funding applications, and pro-actively develop external funding proposals where appropriate
Oversee the planning, performance and reporting cycles related to research and research-related innovation and Wintec
Prepare submissions based on internal funding proposals received for the Central Research Approval Group (CRAG) to consider applications for all internal research related funding streams
Report to (CRAG) following each funding round and facilitate discussions and decisions, also reporting back to CRAG annually on outcomes achieved
Advise researchers on the decisions of CRAG and recommend actions
Manage all aspects of internal and assigned externally funded research projects, including budgets and milestones, and ensure the research output is to a standard expected for funding to support researchers and research teams
Disseminate the outputs of successful research projects as appropriate to internal and external stakeholders
Oversee the expenditure of Applied Research and Development projects to ensure they are completed within budget
Manage the PBRF process, involving the interface with TEC and the Wintec Library to ensure the accurate and appropriate provision of information and plans, and advise the R&D Director on best practice to ensure growth in all of PBRF performance areas
Pro-actively develop the research management systems and processes to facilitate ongoing improvement of support services and excellence in Wintec research in line with relevant global best practice
Pro-actively grow the value and scope applications for external Applied Research and Development funding and grants in collaboration with relevant staff
Research Ethics Committee / Manage the process of accreditation with the Health Research Council of New Zealand
Provide annual report for the activities for approval by the Research and Development Director and submission to the Academic Board
Ensure the Research Ethics Policy and procedures are up to date, reflect current best practice and are complied with.
Communications and reporting / Provide daily support to researchers; advise on research, mentors, tools; facilitate researcher access to appropriate support services; interface between the funder and researcher to assist with access to external funding.
Coordinate the collection of reporting from researchers.
Disseminate research outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.
Analyse research metrics to ensure standards and quality and performance requirements are being met.
Develop the Applied Research and Development reporting of Wintec to improve relevance and provide a realistic overview of Applied Research and Development activity, complying with external and internal reporting requirements as agreed with the Research and Development Director
Design and manage a series of internal and external events to build Wintec’s research capability and profile and disseminate research outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.
Advise on and promote applications for external funding by researchers and Centres. Provide support during the application process on request, and pro-actively develop external funding proposals where appropriate.
Other Duties / Design and implement functions and processes in the Research Office as required to incorporate new Applied Research and Development initiatives
Assist with the development, and management of, the Research Office budget
Manage the Research Office staff and systems to ensure they operate effectively and efficiently
Maintain good working knowledge of the expectations of all stakeholders
Develop and maintain harmonious and positive relationships with colleagues and subordinates
Participate in the Research Office as a committed manager
Contribute to the development, efficiency and ongoing success of Wintec.
