Background / Establishedin1976,theCertifiedParalegalprogramisavoluntarynational
certificationprogramavailabletoparalegalsandlegalassistants.Throughthis
program,paralegalsareabletoemphasizetheirdedicationtoprofessionalgrowthbyseekingadmissiontotheCertifiedParalegalprogramandbysuccessfullycompleting
theCertified paralegalexamination. TomaintaintheCPcredential,
allCertifiedParalegalsmustsubmitevidenceofcompletionofatleastfifty(50)
hoursofcontinuinglegal education,includingfivehoursoflegalethics,
everyfiveyears.
Tobeeligibleforcredit,continuingeducationprogramsmustberelevanttotheworkofparalegals.CertifiedParalegalsmayreceivecreditforattendingseminarsinareas
Other thansubstantivelaw(non-substantiveeducation),uptoamaximum
creditof10hoursduringanyfive-yearperiod.Examplesoftheseprogramswould
includeseminarsonofficemanagement,generalskillsprogramsonsuchtopicsas
publicspeaking,accounting andcomputertraining.Thisruleisimportantto
sponsorsofeducationalprogramsasanexplanationofwhysomeCertifiedParalegalsmayreceivecreditforattendingaseminarandothersmaynot.
Qualifications / Approvedprogramsmustmeetthefollowingqualifications:

Subjectsmustberelevanttotheworkoflegalassistants/paralegals.Sessionscoveringsuchtopicsasfederalorstaterules,ethics,substantiveareasofthe

law(e.g.,torts,estateplanning,familylaw,etc.)andproceduresmayqualify,
providedtheseminarmeetsotherqualificationsoutlinedbelow.

Eachseminarprogrammustbeatleastfiftyminutesinlength.
Facultyshouldincludeattorneys,paralegals,and/orattorney/paralegalteams.
Seminarprogramswhichrequireanalysisandinterpretationofthelawbythe

speakersmustfeatureanattorneyasthepresenteroroneofthepresenters.
Thisruleappliestoboththepresentationoftheseminaritselfandtheanalysis
andstudyrequiredtoprepareforthesession.

DisabilitiesAct.

Approval / OnceitisdeterminedtheseminarprogrammeetstherequirementsoftheCertifying
BoardforParalegals,thefollowinglanguagemayappearontheseminarbrochureand
promotionalliterature:
“ThisseminarmeetstherequirementsoftheNALACertifyingBoardfor
ParalegalsforcontinuinglegaleducationcreditrequiredtomaintaintheCP
(CertifiedParalegal)credential.”
ThislanguagemaybeusedonlybyauthorizationoftheCertifyingBoardforParalegals.ReproductionoftheNALA,CP,orCLAlogosisnotpermitted.
Participantswillreceivecreditforallorportionsoftheprogramattended,providedtheprogrammeetsthefifty‐minuteminimumrequirement.Ifyouchoose,youmayadd
themaximumnumberofhoursthatmaybeavailabletoCertifiedParalegalstothe
abovestatement.ThehourswillbeprovidedtoyouinanacknowledgmentbyNALA
Headquarters.
Theacknowledgmentwillalsodescribewhethertheseminarhasbeenapprovedfor
creditforsubstantivelegaleducation,non‐substantiveeducation,orethicscredit.

Approval of More Than One Program / Approvalisoftheindividualprogram,notoftheorganizationsorcompaniesthat
sponsortheprograms.ArequestformmustbesubmittedandapprovedforeachCLE
programbeforeapprovalmaybepublicizedinseminarpromotionalmaterials.
If,however,thesameprogramisofferedinnumerouslocationswiththesamescheduleandspeakers,approvalwillextendtotheotherprogramsatnoadditionalcharge.
ACertifiedParalegalmayreceivecreditforattendingaseminarthathasnotbeen
approvedinadvancebyNALAthroughthisprocess,providedtheprogrammeetsthe
requirementsoftheCertifyingBoardforParalegals.
