Select appropriate pump for use / Where an electric pump is used the potential for electrocution may be present / Supervisor to assess each application to ensure that the most appropriate pump is used. Use of apetrol driven pump will eliminate risk ofelectrocution. Where extension leads need to berun all leads must be suspended off the groundand connected to a power source protected byearth leakage
A petrol driven pump could lead tohazards from exhaust fumes / Ensure that exhaust fumes are not entering confined or enclosed spaces.
Manual handling, inappropriately sizedpump, pump not strong enough toadequately remove water / After the above, selection of pump should be based on the lightest easiest pump to assemblethat will adequately do the required job
On site movement of plant and persons / Water on site could cause electricalhazards / Ensure that no live services are exposed to water prior to proceeding, an electrician may be requiredto confirm this

On site movement of plant and persons (cont) / Slippery surfaces present a hazard ofslips and falls by persons. / Operator to stick to known gravel paths as much as possible. When moving plant off the gravelpathways it may be necessary for the operator tofirst walk the path to be travelled to confirmdrivability of the surface
Excavate ruts to eliminate surface water / Hazards involved with plant movement asabove
Dig sump holes at low points / Trips and falls into sump holes / Sump holes should be no deeper than required.
Identify location of sump hole prior to moving away by use of appropriate means; i.e. drive a cappedstar post into the sump or place a barricade overthe sump
Check pump and hoses / Electrocution from faulty electric pump / Check leads and electric pump for damage or cuts to leads and ensure a current test tag is attached
Electrocution from holes in hoses which could spray onto electrical equipment / Visually inspect hoses for holes or cuts, which could cause leakage. If there is a risk of waterleakage a new hose should be considered. If thereis a risk that leakage may contact electricalequipment an alternative hose must be fitted

Where persons are to lift heavy items good manual handling techniques must be used. 2 persons to liftheavy items, bend knees when lifting, warm upexercise or stretching prior to lifting

trenches / Identify location of trench using a stick shovel orsimilar to probe the ground for trenches and excavations where necessary.
Connect all hoses and fittings to the pump first thenfrom as far a distance as possible place the pump into the sump or hole

Positioning of hoses / Water pumped into inappropriate locationcould cause a variety of hazards,electrical and environmental / Supervisor to assess and advise location to pump water to. Do not pump water to a location whereelectrical equipment is present.

Monitoring of pumps / Pump burnout and subsequent electrical hazards. Hoses may have moved causingflooding of work areas. Tank or pits being pumped into may be reaching their limitsand overflow / Pumps and hoses should be regularly monitored to ensure that they are functioning proper
Refuelling of petrol

Fuel spills causing environmental damage if spilt on the ground or fire / explosion riskif spilt on hot motor / Take care when refuelling to ensure that fuel is not spilt, fuel containers with a spout and funnels maybe required to ensure this
Dewatering General / Workers getting wet feet causing itching and irritation / Workers to wear good quality leak free footwear when walking on site with wet ground conditions
Gum boots are provided for workers to use whilstdewatering and should be worn whilst dewatering
