At House with No Steps (HWNS), we are dedicated to giving people with a disability a fair go. We are one of Australia’s leading disability services providers, empowering lives across NSW, Qld, Vic, Tas and ACT. We are a not for profit organisation that has been supporting people with a disability for over 50 years.

We transform the lives of 4,200 people by enabling people with a disability to realise their personal aspirations and goals. We have 3000 employees across 259 locations and these numbers are increasing! (Correct as 30 October 2017).

The recruitment process

HWNS recruits employees on the basis of merit. The purpose of our recruitment process is to ensure that our customers are receiving the right care from the right person with the right skills and values.

Below is a brief guide to the stages involved in our recruitment process. While this is a general overview, we encourage you to review the specific job advertisement for the role you are applying for in case further information is needed. The will be a nominated contact person specified on the job advertisement if you have further questions.

What happens during the recruitment process?

Stage / Description
Application / Read through the job advertisement and carefully consider if you are the right person with the right skills, values and attitude for the position.
Complete your application online through our HWNSwebsite:
Ensure that you provide an answer for everything on the online application form correctly. Applications with missing or little information will not be considered.
Attach a resume
Your resume should outline your relevant experience and qualificationsIt should be a separate file to your cover letter.
Attach a cover letter
Ensure that your cover letter addresses each of the essential criteria. Attach this as a separate file.
Submit your application
Submit your application by the advertised closing date and time. Late applications will not be accepted.
If you have any questions please read through our FAQs or contact the nominated contact person on the Job Advertisement for clarification.
Initial screening / Your application will be reviewed against the requirements of the role. If successful your application will progress to either the Assessment Stage or Interview Stage
Assessment / HWNS holds assessment centres when running large recruitment drives. If your application progresses through initial screening as part of a bulk recruitment campaign, the next stage will involve an information session and assessment workshop.
During the information session you will be provided some details about what it is like to work at HWNS and will have the opportunity to meet one of our customers as well as range of employees working at HWNS.
Assessments may include group discussions, group activities, interviews, work sample tasks such as case studies and role-plays.
The assessment centre activities are timed and more information will be provided on the day.
If you have a disability and feel that you may require assistance or adjustments during the assessment process, please contact the nominated contact person to discuss your requirements.
The capabilities we assess on the day relate to the role you are applying for and are described in the relevant position description.
Interview / The interview will involve an interview panel consisting of two or more assessors.
Interviews will include behaviour-based questions. These questions enableyou to demonstrate how you have successfully applied the role criteria in your previous work or studies.
Probity, screening and Reference checks / If you are being considered for the role at HWNS, we will contact you to obtain your consent and conduct probity checks.These may include:
National criminal record check
Fitness for work
WWCC (NSW)
WWVP (ACT)
Blue Card (Qld)
Reference checks
All of these checks will be completed prior to offering you employment.
Employment offer / If successful, you may be offered the role verbally, followed by a written offer soon thereafter included as part of our HWNS New Starter Pack. Please return these documents before your first day as the newest member of our House with No Steps team.

Bulk Intakes and high applications:

Occasionally we receive high numbers of applications for some roles. We will always endeavour to ensure that our processes are fair and as such this may extend the time it takes to determine a suitable applicant to ensure a thorough screening process.
