Provost’s Award for Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities

CaliforniaStatePolytechnicUniversity, Pomona

Purpose of Award

The purpose of the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities is to recognize outstanding faculty accomplishments in scholarly and/or creative activities. As the award recognizes a distinguished record of achievement in scholarly and/or creative activities, the totality of the nominees’ career accomplishments will be considered. The intent is to grant one award annually.

Scholarly and Creative Activities Criteria Considered

All scholarly and creative activities are appropriate. "Scholarly activities" shall be defined as those that create and/or advance existing knowledge through systematic investigation and acquisition of data, analysis and interpretation of data, as well as public dissemination of novel knowledge through peer-reviewed publications and/or patents. Scholarly activities may involve basic, applied, or pedagogical research. "Creative activities" shall be defined as original contributions in the fine, performing, literary, graphic, and digital arts.

Eligibility

The award is open to all faculty members, librarians, counselors, and coaches, and faculty participating in the Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP), and emeritus faculty. An individual may receive this award only once.

Nominations

Nominations may be submitted by any interested person or organization (e.g., student, staff, faculty colleague, administrator, Alumni Association, etc.). Self nominations will also be accepted. Nomination statements shall be submitted to the Academic Senate Office and must include statement of acceptance from the nominee.

Timeline

The committee for the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities shall establish the timeline for the award process in each academic year and inform the academic community on nomination, application and award procedures and deadlines.

Criteria

  1. Scholarly and/or creative accomplishments will be considered as evidenced by any of the following:
  2. Publications or presentations in refereed media
  3. Patents
  4. Published books, chapters, and articles
  5. Published teaching cases and/or instructional materials
  6. Software developed for pedagogic or applied purposes
  7. Presentations or performances at peer-recognized events
  8. Overall impact/usefulness of the scholarly/creative activity will be considered as evidenced by any of the following:
  9. Helping to improve the human condition and quality of life
  10. Contributions to knowledge, practice, or pedagogy
  11. Wide peer recognition of the work as substantial, seminal, and scholarly
  12. Degree of innovation
  13. Importance to Cal Poly Pomona will be considered as evidenced by any of the following:
  14. Enhanced status of Cal Poly Pomona or its academic units
  15. Significant grants and contracts received
  16. Mentoring and facilitating the professional development of other faculty and staff
  17. Mentoring and facilitating the professional development of student trainees
  18. Curriculum innovation in ways that are important to the discipline, industry, and/or practice

Selection Procedures

After receiving the nomination statements, the Committee for the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities will invite all nominees to provide as many of the following items as relevant for further consideration by the Committee:

  1. A curriculum vitae.
  2. Copies of relevant publications, patents, creative or artistic productions, etc.

The Committee may solicit additional information it deems necessary to make an informed decision. After a careful analysis of the nomination statements, as well as all supporting materials received from the nominees, the Committee for the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities will select the award recipient and will forward this recommendation to the Provost.

Award Selection Committee

The Committee for the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities shall be selected by the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate at the beginning of the fall quarter of each academic year. The chair of the committee shall be elected by majority vote of the membership. The selection committee shall have a minimum of one member from each of the following colleges of the University: Agriculture, Business Administration, Education and Integrative Studies, Engineering, Environmental Design, Hospitality Management, Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, Science, and one member from the related area constituency (librarians, counselors, and coaches). The Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies shall serve on the selection committee as a voting member in an ex-officio capacity. Ad-hoc on-campus experts may be recruited to the committee in order to provide input regarding the scholarly and/or creative merit of applications. Former awardees will be encouraged to serve on the Committee.

The Award

The award will be presented by the Provost during the University commencement ceremony. In the fall quarter of the following academic year, the recipient will be honored as the keynote speaker of the Provost’s Symposium on Faculty Scholarship.

The award will include:

  1. A cash award of $3,000.
  2. A plaque.
  3. Inscription of the recipient’s name on a permanent plaque in the University Library.
  4. Posting of the award recipient’s name and biography on a permanent website maintained by the Division of Academic Affairs.
  5. Placement of a letter noting the award in the recipient’s Personnel Action File.

Provost’s Award for Excellence in Service

The purpose of the Provost’s award for service excellence is to recognize outstanding contributions of service to the University, the professional community, or the community at large. As the award recognizes a record of significant and enduring contributions, the totality of the nominees’ career accomplishments will be considered. The intent is to grant one award each year.

Eligibility

The award is open to all faculty members including faculty participating in the Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP) and emeritus faculty. An individual may receive this award only once.

Criteria

Candidates for the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Service will have a record of service above and beyond what is normally expected of faculty at Cal Poly Pomona.

Applications will be evaluated with respect to the following:

  • Exemplary contributions to faculty governance
  • Active and valued activities to improve the University
  • Significant voluntary service outside the classroom benefiting students, colleagues, or the University
  • Noteworthy and widely recognized contributions to the larger professional community including specific professional societies
  • Significant service as a representative of the University to the community at large

Only accomplishments that have been carried out while the individual was a member of the Cal Poly Pomona faculty qualify for consideration.

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona

Purpose of the Award

The purpose of the Provost’s Award for Teaching Excellence is to recognize outstanding teachers. It is assumed at Cal Poly, a teaching institution, that faculty will pursue excellent teaching as an end in itself; this award is designed with the intent to promote and encourage faculty in this endeavor. The intent is to grant one award each year.

Eligibility

The award is open to all faculty members including, faculty members participating in the Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP). An individual may receive this award only once.

Criteria

Candidates for the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching will have a record of excellence in teaching that exceeds the norm expected of faculty at Cal Poly Pomona. Applications will be evaluated with respect to the following:

  • Student performance and student evaluations
  • Teaching procedures that challenge students and contribute to student interest, enthusiasm, and achievement
  • Active and valued student involvement outside the classroom
  • High professional standards
  • Fair methods for evaluating student performance
  • Evidence of significant professional development as it relates to teaching
