Prof Leisewitz graduated from Onderstepoort in 1987, completed his specialization in companion animal medicine in 1995 and PhD with the Open University in the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics in Oxford UK in 2007. He was awarded a Wellcome Trust Travelling Research Fellow grant for the duration of his PhD studies. He worked at Onderstepoort from 1990 to 2006 and then left veterinary practice completely to give himself to full time church work. He returned to part time work at Onderstepoort in December 2008 and continues with his church work. He currently contributes to the running of the small animal clinics in the Academic Hospital and assists the research efforts of the Department.
