Academic Challenge

PROCEDURE GUIDE FOR ACADEMIC CHALLENGE

PURPOSE: To provide information on the preparation and conduct of the Academic Competition at Mansfield TigersInvitational Drill Meet. Individual winners of the competition will be awarded medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Team trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. No more than one team may enter from each school.

GENERAL: Academic Competition is a timed, three phased, gender neutral individual and team event involving 4 team members. All members will contribute to the final team score. One cadet must be designated as Team Captain prior to competition. Three (3) categories have been selected which contain general knowledge for any JROTC cadet

Station-1 is an oral examination of the Cadet Creed. Each cadet will be required to recite the Cadet Creed for their respective branch. The Cadet Creed is worth 100 point: 5 points’ deduction for omissions, or added words. Plus 50 points for presentation, totaling a 150 points. JROTC programs other than the Army‘s Cadet Creed will match their respective program (Air Force, Marines, and Navy). Teams will report to Station 1 NLT 10 minutes prior to start time.

Station-2is an individual examination consisting of 20 questions from the categories of current events (national news only), drill and ceremony, Leadership, and map reading. Strict procedures will be observed and cadets talking and making verbal gestures will be disqualified. The test will be conducted and graded on the Classroom Performance System (CPS) and each question will have a time limit. The time limit for all CPS exams will be determined by the NCOIC and posted at the entrance to the test area prior to testing. Each cadet will be assigned one CPS remote to take the examination. Cadets will be given instructions on how to operate CPS prior to testing.

Station-3is a Teamcompetition consisting of ten (10) questions from the following categories, history, financial planning, service learning and winning colors, and The Cadets will be allowed to huddle and collaborate on each response and must give the response within the allotted 60 second time limit. The team captain will be assigned one CPS remote and be responsible for ensuring the team’s answer is loaded in CPS. This test will also be conducted and graded on the CPS.

NOTE: Videotaping of Stations 2 and 3 is prohibited. Coaches are not allowed to accompany their teams into the testing area for stations1, 2 and 3

SCORING:

Scoring from each phase will be combined and a final team score posted throughout the day upon departure.

MAX SCORE

Station 1Each word is 1 point 150

Station 2Each question is 5 points 100

Station 3Each question is 100 points 1000

Individual scoring: station 1 + station 2 = individual score

Team scoring: Sum (4 individual scores) + station 3 score = teams overall score.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

All contestants will be under strict orders to avoid any discussion of testing with anyone.

Any questions or concerns should be directed to the NCOIC of the site.

All protests will be directed to the site NCOIC. Decisions by the site NCOIC will be final.

Cadets will be required to recite the Cadet Creed from the Position of Attention

The Junior ROTC Cadet Creed

I am an Army (Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps) Junior ROTC Cadet.

Coaches need to check scores prior to leaving the competition station. Once they depart the station, all scores are final.

-All contestants will be under strict orders to avoid any discussion of testing with ANYONE.

-Uniform: Military uniform as designated by unit instructor.

-No loitering in the “testing site” after competition.
